Silver plan versus on your own for meals and such

You may or may not break even on the silver plan. Ask yourself how much of a difference that makes. Some people like knowing that some of the stuff they want to do is prepaid - and if they don't get the total "value" out of it they are fine. Others stress out about getting the value from the plan. Getting value from the plan is possible, but....

My advice to a first timer is to spend more time enjoying the activities in the parks and less time doing spa treatments, shows, going to expensive dinners, etc. Hoop De Doo is fun, but it takes an entire evening - which means getting your five year old some rest time in the middle of the day, which means less park time. Cirque is incredible, but once again, takes several hours to accomplish. Eating dinner at the nicer Disney restaurants will get value from a Silver Plan, but will your five year old be comfortable in those restaurants (will you be comfortable with your child there?) - and once again, its a time consuming option. What are you going to Disney for? For the first time visitor, it probably isn't to rent water mice, eat out, or get a massage. It sounds like you guys are going for your daughter, so plan days full of the MK, lots of dinners where chicken fingers are available that don't take an hour and a half, a character meal (or two), and a lot of pool time, early mornings followed by early bedtimes - none of which are effective use of wishes.

Skip the Silver Plan so that you can play things a little more by ear without feeling like you "wasted" a bunch of money. Make plans (its a lot of fun) but build in the flexibility to change them at a moments notice.

Next trip - when you have a better idea of the lay of the land and what you enjoy doing, you can decide if putting your daughter in Simba's Club for a night out at Jiko is worth it. This trip, you may all just fall in bed after a snack bar dinner at 8:00.

At this point, we are opting for no silver plan and doing pretty much what crisi and some other folks suggested, focusing on our five year old's level of fun, not on booking our family with more than we would otherwise do. We'll have some special nights, Ohana's, Hoopdeedoo, and work out how many character meals. Just about anything we do will be fun. We will have more time for the parks and down time.

When we're more familiar with the park and/or she's older and enjoys more of the finer things in dining, etc., then we will consider this option.

Thanks for all your support and suggestions.

IMHO I think you're making the right decision, especially after reading this is your very first trip. Like I said I think the SP is great for some folks, but in your case I think it would be a waste of money.

As newbies you'll be so busy exploring and it would be a real bummer for you to say HALT we need to head to "wherever" to make that diner ressie, especially if you're having a blast at whatever you are doing.

You're going to be very busy this first time out of the WDW gate and why add more factors into it. Make this more of an explore trip. Pick a few special night time dinners/show and then just wing it during the day.

With a 5 year old, you'll probably want to plan for downtime anyhow. Some kids are troopers and want to go go go, but others need that few hour break just chilling out in the room or by the pool to keep them going the rest of the night. And since you've never been, it's going to be hard to know how your 5 yr old will react.

And if you're planning on staying at a WDW deluxe resort, you can still plan a romantic night out "just the two of you dinner" and take her to one of the kid care places for a couple hours. This way you can check it out and see if it would be a place you'd want to leave her for a more prolonged period of time in the future.

The first trip is the most special, especially when seen through the eyes of a child! So don't try to pack so much in that you coming home needing another vacation. ;) Sit back and let the WDW magic take over!! Yes, you need to make some plans and will need to nail down a rough outline of a plan before you go, but keep it very open so that you can just relax and explore WDW at your own pace.

The most important thing is to have FUN!

Whatever you don't do this time; there is always next time!LOL

Enjoy your trip!

I have to remember that for those of you on the FTP, the rates may be different . In 2004, I was quoted $68 for the silver plan per adult and $55 for it per child.

Still, I think my overall strategy will be not to go with this plan and focus on scheduling less and focusing more on what a 5 y.o. can handle and enjoy.l
