I've looked at maps online but just can't figure out the answer to this question. We're staying at the Desert Inn and Suites and will not be going into Disneyland on our first afternoon, however we would like to explore Downtown Disney. Will we be able to walk straight over there from our hotel (it looks like a straight shot) or will we have to walk way out of our way because we won't be using park tickets yet?

Was that a completely confusing question?

You can walk to the main plaza as if going to the parks. You will need to go through security. Once you get to the main plaza between the two parks, just keep going, you will go out through another security post and you will then be in Downtown Disney.

You don't need tickets to walk through the plaza, only to get into the parks and each one has their own entry gates and styles.

You can also park over on the other side right by downtown disney. (I know, gas..) But yeah, if you didn't wanna do the security thing

No, you're fine going through the Esplanade. They don't need your tickets till you go through the turnstiles. You'll go through security/bag check, but that usually isn't too busy and only takes a minute or two to get through the line.

But you are going to have to prepare your children that they are going to see both parks (flanking you) but not go in. My son has a hard time with that especially at the beginning of the trip. So prepare yourselves and prepare them.
