Silly question about seasons below equator.

This may be a strange question, but it came up the other day during a conversation and we couldn't agree on an answer.

We realize that below the equator when we here in New Jersey have cold weather during our winter months (say November through March) you have warm weather.

So....then does that mean your school break is during December/January during your warm months?. Do you call December/January "summer" being the weather is warm or is the whole world on the same season at once regardless of the temperature? In that case it would be warm in Winter and cold in Summer?

Please help if you can. Thanks.

I can't answer about the school years below the equator. But i have internet friends in Australia so I can answer the seasons part of the question.

Seasons there are based on the same temp ranges we base them on here above the equator. Hence winter for us in the USA=Summer(or at least part of it) in Australia. I don't know the actual months for Summer down there but i know for certain that they celebrate Christmas on Dec. 25th and it is still Summer then.

Remember back to the Summer Olympics in Sydney awhile back? They were held in October at the very beginning of Summer there.

I can answer this one for you

Our summer is Dec, Jan & Feb...with Feb being our hottest month

School year runs from end Jan through to early to mid December depending on which state you live in.

Schools have 6 to 8 weeks holiday from when they finish in December to when school starts back a the end of January.

School holidays are also in June/July for 2 weeks & September for 2 weeks. Plus 10 days at Easter

Winter here is June, July & August, with August being the coldest.
