silly lens question?

Can a lens wear out? I'm currently using a Nikon D80 with a lens that I've been using for about 10 years. Sometimes the camera refuses to take a picture even when I think the image is focused. If I move slightly or refocus then usually I can shoot the pic, but, not always. I only have the problem with 1 lens so it isn't the camera. Any ideas? TIA

Yes. The mechanics in a lens can most definitely wear out. I've got 2 lenses with dead AF motors myself and a third that refuses to change aperture.
