We are going this week to the Dolphin and as it is just 4 family members, we are all in the same room. My SIL is the worst snorer I have ever heard!!! We are thinking of trying the new Breathe Right spray. We have tried the strips but they don't do too much good. I know he needs surgery, but he refuses. Any suggestions to help me get some sleep next week?

Ear plugs. I brought a set on my trip last week, because my brother was staying with us.

I just saw a funny commercial where the wife bangs her snoring husband over the head with a frying pan... I'm thinking of trying that with my DH! Kidding...:crazy2:

Another thing that I find helps is to leave the airconditioner or fan running in the room at night. That is a nice constant noise and helps to cover up any other noises inside the room or coming from outside also.

Ear plugs, some people sleep with headphones and music on but somehow I can't see that being very comfortable.

I've had those thoughts before. ;)

BC - we shared a room with my sisters last year. My husband is a horrible snorer. What we did was use place an air filter at the head of the bed to help with the noise. It did help a little. The only other option we have found to help is ear plugs.

Good luck! Hope you have a great trip!

Try one of those mouth guards to stop teeth grinding. I think you can buy them over the counter at the pharmacy. DH snores really really loud and the dentist recomended a guard because he grinds his teeth at night..........bonus......it significantly cut down on the snoring !

Ok, it's too late now, but if your SIL is snoring, then surgery isn't always necessarily the answer.

Has she had a sleep study done? This is a painless test where you go sleep overnight in a sleep clinic and they try to determine the reason for the snoring. Most times it's sleep apnea - where the muscles in the back of the throat will relax too much and then vibrate as you try to breathe. The problem is it can cause you to stop breathing completely, which in turn wakes your body up, stops the snoring, starts breathing, then you fall back asleep and do this again. Over and over and over. I was doing it 60+ times an HOUR.

Is your SIL always tired? Does she fall asleep at the drop of the hat? Is she worried about falling asleep while driving? If so, it's a very good possibility that she has Apnea. It is a life threatening condition simply because of the drowsyness when driving.

My doctor told me that surgery was only 50% effective and might not even be permanent. So now I (along with some family members and a few choice DISers I've talked to ) have a CPAP machine - it helps you breath at night, and stops the snoring. Next to buying into Disney's DVC, it's one of the best things I've even done for me and my family. And yes, I was keeping the WHOLE family up at night. Even DD was complaining.

The test doesn't hurt, it should be covered by insurance, and the CPAP is easy to get used to.

Of course, that is all too late. You can try the spray (which numbs or 'freezes' those muscles at the back of your throat) and see if it works. I'd bring ear plugs. And tell your SIL to talk to her Dr about getting tested - the health benefits to her are immeasurable.

If there is any way you can DON'T let your SIL have the surgery.
I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea. I snored badly and woke up many more times than I want to say because I had stopped breathing. My doctor didn't even suggest the CPAP machine, mainly because I told him I was a light sleeper and couldn't fall asleep with those white noise machines. (drives my kids crazy, I hear everything they do)
I had the surgery and they removed my adenoids and uvula. I still snore, but not as badly, enough to wake myself up a few times a night from the noise. I still wake up gasping for breath due to the sleep apnea. And I have to watch everything I eat because if I eat too fast or too large a bite I choke on my food. The food goes down my throat sometimes before I have begun to swallow and I choke. There have been times where I had to bang my stomach into a counter to expel it (heimlech maneuver) And my adenoids have grown back which the Dr. said might happen.
I was told that losing some weight would help so I dropped 30 lbs. Still no help. Not sure what they can do but that CPAP machine is the next step.
My son uses the foam earplugs when he goes to WDW with me. He said they do help quite alot. I also use them but for outside noise, they don't block the noise you make yourself. That is one of the biggest problems with ear plugs. You hear your heart beat, you hear your breathing, and every time you roll over you hear that. I can't sleep with all that noise. Peggie

DH snores horridly, the only thing I can do is fall asleep first!

stepping on surgery soap box...

DD6 had numerous medical problems from the time she was 15 months until 4 years old. Asthma, serious coughing when sleeping, not always laying down, even in a car seat..coughing would get so bad, she would throw up. After about 2 years of nebulizers, midnight trips to the ER, steroids, allergy testing etc...plus Singulair daily

One night, DH woke up and realized that DD was not snoring...he laid there for a bit and listened to her sleep. She would snore, snore, snore NOTHING...gasp, snore snore snore etc... he didnt tell me until the next morning.. I called her Doc, got her in that afternoon, Doc said to tape her that night, Doc got me in at DHMC Childrens Hospital 2 days later to see an ENT. I brought in the tape...one look down her throat, ENT says- "her tonsils are HUGE"...Reg doc had mentioned that before, we figured they were inflamed due to her coughing. ENT says, she needs a T/A...when she falls asleep, her T & A are lax, and blocking her airway, causing the sleep apnea, and also her coughing/throwing up...T/A was scheduled for the following Monday.

DD went in- came out, and stayed overnight due to the asthma. That was in September, of 2001. She did not take her singulair immediatly after this, since she was on soft foods/liquids.

I am happy to say that 2 full years later, not one trip to the ER, no singulair, no nebulizer, no steriods and most importantly NO SNORING AND NO SLEEP APNEA!!!!

Her whole attitude has changed, she's now a morning person!

Sorry this is so long, however for some people the surgery is the only way to go. DH has an employee who had the CPAP machine for 2 years now, has lost weight, (about 35lbs) and is now scheduled for the surgery after the holidays.

For the OP though, I'd go for ear plugs, and TRY to fall asleep first!

I use ear plugs very often when I am not at home. I get the kind at Walgreens that are a little contour and have what I call little wings on the ends of them. They work great for me. I don't hear myself breathing or snoring.
