DH's sister is graduating from an online college soon and their parents are taking all of us out to dinner to celebrate. If we get a present instead of giving money, do you have any budget ideas (under $75) what to get her? She recently moved in with her boyfriend if that helps. Thank you for any ideas. ETA - she is getting degree in psychology to help youths is what I was told.

The one thing that came to my mind is an engraved pen http://www.giftpens.com/Cross-Advantage-Ballpoint-Pens_c_115.html or this one from Things Remembered http://www.thingsremembered.com/pro...68/sc/2691/157499.uts?refineByCategoryId=2691
but maybe a pen would get lost too easily?

Honestly, CASH is the only thing that comes to mind for someone who is graduating. I would just give her $50.00, if you're trying to keep it under $75.00.

Ever since our DD was 4yo, it was her dream to be a teacher. When she graduated with a degree in SpEd, we gave her this. She's gotten so many compliments on it.

It's over your budget but maybe someone else could go in with you and make it a joint gift.

Congrats to your SIL!

That's a very pretty necklace but not sure if we could find someone to go in with us for it.

How about giving the $25 pen/journal engraved set and $30 cash? Does that sound too cheap? That way she would have "something" to remember her special day.

I would just do cash, I'm pretty sure that's all that I got and it will definitely be appreciated. $50 is a more than generous grad gift.
I would avoid anything related to moving in with her boyfriend-- then it'll be more of a housewarming gift instead of graduation. You want to celebrate her achievement!

I gave my SIL a $50 gift card to Kohl's when she graduated to help start a career wardrobe.

We did a gift tree sort of thing called Fun, Food and Freedom.

Fun was a gc to Moreys (local amusement/boardwalk)

Food was a gc to Acme (local grocery store)

Freedom was a savings bond (freedom in retirement).

Not sure if savings bonds are still popular now, but they were common grad gifts then.

A classic graduation gift is a copy of Dr. Seuss' "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" and you can tuck a few tens or twenties in it and write a nice congratulatory message on the inside cover. :goodvibes

I agree cash is the way to go, and nothing to do with her moving in with her bf. I would think most people would prefer the cash over a pen.

If you are leaning towards a pen, then I say go for it. Make sure it's a nice pen with ink that flows well or else it will never be used and be a waste of money.

Some other suggestions are: a really nice frame for her diploma (usually the University's--even online--sell something commemorative of their University specifically for the diploma's) or some nice picture frames.

Money is also a nice gift.

I'd give her 100 bucks. All the other efforts to make it a cheap gift will seem just that. Just my take on it.

Think..... How many pens have have you lost since you graduated High School?????? Do you know what a heavy pressure situation to not loss a pencil/ pen set?? Not a good gift!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cash is King!!!!!!!

Wrap it up in a funny way!! Dish towels, heart shaped candy box, like that?

are you crafty at all? Here is what I made my DH for his Valentine BD. You could put gift cards for restaurants in it and give it a "graduation" type theme. I stamped my pages, but you could do stickers or even print stuff out on the computer. If you are interested I can send you a link to an online tutorial made by a fellow Close to my Heart consultant. It was super easy to make.

My daughter just recently got her Master's and we gave her a briefcase. I don't remember what we gave our kids when they got there undergrad degrees :upsidedow

OP here- thanks for all the great ideas! I am not crafty so I think I'll go with $50 cash and wrap it up in something like a pretty bowl.
