SIL... bad thoughts of DVC

Thanks for all your posts! It has been clear to us that we are still making the right decision.

You have brought up great points and we have finally made the decision to buy resale. The resort we would like to be our home is OKW. Now, just the final trip to WDW to go through the tour and the deal will be done. I can't wait to share the moment with you that have made it all possible :)

Thanks for all your patience and wisdom,
Deb

We are currently in the process of closing on a resale, and I also took into consideration the lifespan of the deed, but when it came down to convenience and location there was no question we were going with DVC. The "free" transportion system, and the convenience of being on site for those extended hours, and events is well worth it.
One more thing I took into consideration was "What are all those timeshares outside WDW going to look like in 40 or 50 years?"
Would they be worth anything, or would the maintenance cost be extemely high due to the age of the properties?
From what I saw first hand is WDW is totally anal about upkeep, and the properties will always have curb appeal. We look forward to taking full advantage of everything DVC has to offer and hope to meet many of you in June.
Good Luck.

Hi, dairyou. Although I am sure that your SIL has only good intentions, I also think she is wrong. I am not a expert on timeshares, but from what I understand, DVC is hard to get with a trade. For many here, offsite resorts will not do.

The ending date of 2042 does not bother me in the slightest. I wouldn't want to assume that my kids (if I had some) would even be in a financial position to pay dues, or visit WDW often.

Good luck...

I think you should buy and not invite you SIL to visit WDW with you. If she ever asks why you didn't invite her, just tell her you thought it would be too expensive for her and since it runs out in 2042 (or 2054) there is not much time left to enjoy it and you only have so many points.

I would take the exact opposit track as KIUAN! I would reserve a family vacation in a GV, and take her along. She will sing a different song after that!:p

Keep in mind that it is possible to trade into DVC, therefore the statements that you 'can' are true. Of course, the statement that you can walk on the moon is true since we all know its technologically possible.

Reading through this thread has finally clarified an issue for me...the common wisdom is to always buy at the DVC resort you would most like to stay. It finally dawned on me why no other timeshare has ever appealed to me even though the concept as a whole does...there aren't any other timeshares where I'd rather stay.

The OP's SIL may be prejudiced by the fact that there are a large number of TS's in the orlando area, and that by and large they're supposedly easy to trade into. The SIL probably doesn't comprehend how in demand DVC actually is today.

Some of the best advice my mom gave me was, I provide for my children and let them provide for theirs'. She had been ill for a long time and knew her time was short. She could have left things to the grandkids but left it up to the parents to provide. I hope I'm passing on my love of all things Disney to my family and their descendants. Who knows what the world or the parks will be like then. We can only hope that the goodness of WDW and its' entertainment value goes on forever but that doesn't make it so.

Bottom line, do what is best for you and your family now. The future will take care of itself.

Your SIL was wrong about a few things but her heart was in the right place. I advised my friends not to buy DVC based upon the notion DVC made more sense for people with small or no families. And from one perspective that's sort of true...until you watch people hauling their strollers and cranky kids about, wasting time trying to rent a car etc etc. That doesn't make me a bad person...and later on...after visiting my friends at BWV...I realized I was a person with a small or no family! And bought VWL.

Timeshares...well you decided to buy OKW (personally I'd buy SSR instead and trade into OKW but you are buying for you and not for me...plus look at my track record of giving advice). But for others who may read this thread I'll say.

Buy at Disney if you come to Orlando regularly to go to Disney.

Buy non-Disney in Orlando, resale, if you come to Orlando annually to golf, shop or do theme parks in general. Other timeshares do offer advantages to owners that are useful.

Buy elsewhere if you go to Orlando less than every other year. Orlando is easy to trade into and buying a resort that suits your other tastes will let you get more use out of it and better trades to other parts of the country. Good example is the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe or Smuggler's Notch on the other side of the pass.
