Significant Increase in Annual Dues Proposed

According to the article: "...will take the $10 minimum hourly wage to $11 by December 2018, $12 by March 2019 and $13 by September 2019. Minimum pay will then increase to $14 in 2020 and $15 in 2021."
So we are seeing a $3 increase for 2019 that is translating to a 4-5% extra increase in the annual dues (since we already typically see a 4-5% increase without the wage bump. The $3 increase represents a 30% increase from the previous wage.

The 2020 $1 increase from $13 to $14 is a 7.7% increase.
Since a 30% increase resulted in a 4-5% bump, I would expect the 7.7% increase to be about a 1% bump over normal year-to-year dues increases (so 5%-6% rather than the usual 4%-5%).
2021 should be similar.

Shall we start a pool to see what they will be next year ?

One thing that happened that went into effect in 2018 is the "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act" in which the corporate tax rate was reduced 14%. Many Corporations took some of their savings and provided wage increases their employees. With record profits and a 14% windfall, I was fully expecting a minimal increase. Are we covering the losses from ESPN and ABC? Just curious....

I am fortunate that VGF is “only” 4% and change. I’m so happy I picked the “bargain basement” resort.

I never would have guessed when I bought my SSR and VGF contracts this year, that VGF would become the cheaper of the two resorts with regards to MFs.

With all that ROFR activity, I thought Disney was planning wonderful upgrades for SSR and AKV. 10% increase in dues is not what I expected. What a strange turn of events that VGF dues are now lower than the "most economical resort". Kind of glad I never could convince a SSR seller to accept my low ball offer actually…

Plus, it’s way less stressful trying to get a low ball VGF through ROFR :)

The overall cost per night of SSR will still be lower although I haven't calculated what. The purchase price is lower and the point requirements for those standard rooms is very good.

They remind me a lot of private enterprise. They remind me of AT&T in the early 80's they operated the Bell System and owned every phone in America. They remind me of OPEC in the 70's when they controlled the world's oil supply. They remind me of cable companies today in markets where they are literally the only player in town.

Disney is far from government, they are capitalism at its finest. We all are free to walk away, but we don't. Disney makes a good product, and for a piece of that sweet, sweet "Disney Magic" they are the only show in town.
Interesting comparison. Look at what happened to some of those giant companies of the past once some competition set in.

The Disney product is changing though, and I fear that many of the changes are costing more to those who are there loyal customer base (because not everyone thinks they are the only show in town, plenty of folks have perfectly great vacations without ever setting foot in the Mouse’s house.). It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds, but I do believe that down the line the door will be open for other entertainment options to open up for those of us tired of the cost increases, crowds, and just want something else to do.

While the increase is far more than I'd hoped, for an increase at BWV and AKL, we can still stay there cheaper than at a non DVC resort.

Wonder if that will change with the doors falling off the monorails, boy how fast they let the monorail go down the toilet. Pretty soon they will not be running at all and bus service for everyone till the new ones show up who know when.

The door feel off because a guest ran their ECV into it.

I wonder what the future holds for the off-property resorts like HHI and VB? With MF's rising this fast, it would almost be a better deal for us to rent out our HHI points and stay at a different resort when we travel to HHI. Right now, the only benefit I see in the HHI points (for me) is that if I can't use them to go to HHI (which is why I bought them), I can still use them for a 7-month reservation at WDW. If it weren't for the fact that I need them to get a 1BR during our preferred travel time (Easter week), I would have just simply added on cheaper points to our AKV contract instead. Of course, with the price of park tickets now almost out of our budget, we will probably be going to HHI more often, so I am hoping that I will be able to use my AKV points to get a 2BR at 7-months instead. Otherwise, I may look into the possibility of renting them all out and paying cash for a VRBO or something else at HHI.

My 2 home resorts (BLT, VGF) are now among the cheaper ones as far as MFs!! I wish I could claim it was because I had some amazing ability to pick good values, whether it is real estate or stocks... :rotfl2::confused3

What about the increased parking revenue? The increased ticket revenue (under the new ticket system) which may come in? Are many of you going to the DVC owners meetings at Coronado this December and asking why such a steep increase? I hope so!

The parking revenue and ticket revenue has nothing to do with DVC.
