There is only one store along a 25 mile stretch of highway up here. It's very clean and nice, and many people stop there, especially tourists on their way to here or there. When I was in there today, waiting to use the ladies room, the mom in front of me was *ranting* to her teenage daughter because of the sign posted (in nice font on fancy paper) that says something along the lines of..."This store is locally owned and family operated. Purchase of the store's products helps keep this restroom available. Thank you." I would NEVER stop and use a bathroom without buying at least a soda or pack of gum, but this lady acted like it was a slap in the face to be reminded of it!

I REALLY wanted to say to her, "If you don't like it, there's a state campground ten miles down the road with pit toilets that haven't been cleaned out in a year that are full of spiders and flies...", but I didn't.

So, would you have been offended by this sign?

Terri

No, It wouldn't bother me. I would never come in and just use the bathroom without buying something.

Would I be offended by the sign or would I be offended by the fact that the woman was ranting? Either way my answer would be no.

I would not be offended. I have a very overactive bladder and in some way pride myself on knowing where the "better" public bathrooms are.

Just last week I needed my husband to stop and we were getting gas which he paid for at the pump. He thought it was amusing I bought a bottle of Diet Pepsi inside because I still felt obligated to buy something inside for using their restroom even though he filled the tank.

A gas purchase counts, IMO. I always felt bad to use the facilities in any place without buying something. There is always SOMETHING you need..a gallon of milk maybe if you are headed for home, or a drink if you are headed out.

Shoot we have a McDonalds in the city of Pittsburgh , during events in the city, to use ther bathroom you have to buy something and show your receipt to the rent a cop stationed outside the bathroom doors.

No lie!

I don't see how people can do that. Come in to a place and expect to use there facilites for free.

I do it all the time...sometimes you just have to go and I dont' feel under any obligation to spend money that I didn't intend to just because I needed to stop and go to the restroom. As long as it is a public restroom, then you aren't under any obligation to buy either. Maybe it just makes me a bad person for not feeling like I need to buy anything. :confused3

We don't dine and dash and we don't pee and run. :lmao: If we don't purchase gas, someone in our car is going to buy something inside that store.

weird... Along I-5 from about the middle of Oregon to the LA region there is nothing basically... a couple cities.. and rest stops that are kept up..sometimes.. but if we stop to get gas then we go.. i always stop at a gas station if it is dark out and there is no man with me.. even if i am not buying something..

A gas station isn't a public facility, it's privately owned and operated. The city doesn't pay for the water, the power, or the amenities, the owner of the gas station does. I don't think you should feel bad, but someone does have to pay for your use of their facilities, they aren't free. Just something to consider.

but they are public restroom unless otherwise noted(some places have signs that state you must be a customer in order to use the facilities, and that's fine, but if it doesn't then I'm still not gonna purchase something just to go.) I genuinely have no issue with businesses not having public restrooms(you must be a customer to use), but if you don't state that then businesses shouldn't expect you to purchase something just to use the restroom. If they want you to, then they should make the bathrooms for customers only.

I've often stopped at McDonald's, especially if I have kids with me, because there isn't anything else around or we are in town and I know there is a bathroom there. I don't always buy something. The kids can't always hold it.

Really? Even in Cleveland we don't do that!;) Go Browns!

That would be why there are no public restrooms in some areas of Eruope. When we were in France you either used the public pay toilets or were a paying customer.

WWYD? We usually buy something for the use of their much needed services. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I work at a coffee shop. I think it is funny because we strive to say hello to everyone that comes in. The people that make a mad dash to the restrooms never make eye contact and then run right back out. Odd behavior or feeling guilty? I understand when it is parents with small kids. But really I would never use a restroom without buying something.

My wife and I have this fight all the time. She has no problem using the facilities without buying anything. There's no way I could ever do it. It used to really start big fights. Now we just accept each other for who we are and move on.
