Side Trip Question (Horseback Riding & Desert visit)

On one of our non-park days in late March - I am making a side trip to take the family horseback riding. Looking at Sunset Ranch in LA. Anyone have a different recommendation?

What's the best time to ride up in the hills to get clear(er) skies? Morning or afternoon?

Also - has anyone taken a road trip to show the family a desert? Open to suggestions on a nature day away from the crowds.
