DD has been on and off miralax for 2 years now. We have seen 2 GI Drs about the issue of constipation. The 1st dr weened her off the miralax and focused in on adding fiber to her diet. The 2nd never asked about her diet and gave her miralax, cystic fibrosis test and cealics disease, both of which came back negative. She was on miralax religiously for 2 months and all of the sudden she started having terrible gas. The burps were awful, she couldn't finish a sentence without at least half a dozen burps. The gas from the other end was worse than that of a large man. She has issues with eating as well. She also developed facial ticks. While in Disney I stopped the miralax as the ticks were getting so bad and her behavior was awful, it didn't seem like this was my child. Her behavior is ok now that I have stopped it, gas is gone, but we still have facial ticks and constipation. Was wondering if there was some alternative to help her with this? We have an appointment with the ped this afternoon and again with the GI Dr on Wed....I just don't know what is going on and I just am so frustrated and need an answer!

Anyone from the Philly area? Ever go to children's hospital in philly? We were thinking of taking her there to see if someone could answer of question.

My daughter has CF, and though she does not have digestive issues, a lot of the children do..Miralax seems to be the most common prescription given to help with their constipation. Like you though, I would have issues with what's going on with your daughter.

I am not from Philly, but can tell you that CHOP is one of the top rated Children's Hospitals in the country. I wouldn't hesitate to take my daughter there, and would encourage you to go that route if you don't get the answers you need.

My dd took Miralax for about 6yrs. This was before it was OTC.

The burping might be a tic.

As far as gas, if your dd will not eat right then you are going to get gas and constipation.

What does she eat/drink in a typical day?

It is an ongoing thing. My dd is 13 and I so want her to get a colonoscopy. She is no longer on Miralax however she is never "right" if that makes sense.

Good Luck with the doc's.:thumbsup2

I don't know if this will be of help, but remembered this article about constipation and kids from Dr Briffa's blog sight.

Also I know several adults that take 400mgs of magnesium a day to solve constipation issues. They take 200mgs in the morning and 200mgs in the evening. Magnesium is the active ingredient in the constipation release product Milk of Magnesia.

Magnesium also has health benefits.

Good luck!

Wow, I hope you can get some answers and some treatment/relief for your daughter.

I just wanted to say.... If she was on it for some time, and then weaned, and then has been back on it for two months, I am not quite so sure that I would attribute the onset of these symptoms with the Miralax.

You are now talking about a myriad of physical and behavorial and possibly neurological symptoms. Not just digestive issues.

I can only recommend that you seek out the best specialists that you can access.
