Has anyone ever worked their pediatrician over for a precautionary antibiotic prescription for Disney? I felt sorry for families that I saw with hacking and sniffling kids when we started our trip last year. Five days in, our kids were the ones coughing and it definintely threw a wet blanket on the experience. It seems to me that this is an unavoidable cycle of sickness with fresh children regularly rotating into an infected pool. I understand that giving antibiotics to healthy children can only encourage development of an indestructable super-virus but.... this is our vacation.

I had my DD at her Ped for her 4 year check up this week. Her ears were bothering her and it seems she has a double ear infection. My Ped gave me drops and a script for oral antibiotics. I filled them and have been giving her the droops but I didn't get the antibiotics mixed at the pharmacy.I am only going to give it to her if she gets a whole lot worse. I am a nurse and my Ped knows me so she gives me a little leeway

It couldn't hurt to ask, especially if your kids are the type to get sick often and require antibiotics. I know one family who went to Disney and had preventative antibiotics because both sons were having surgery the week they came back and the only way to keep them healthy was the meds.
You never know.

But how do you decide if your child has a viral infection or a bacterial one? Only a lab culture can tell for sure, otherwise, you're giving your kids an antibiotic for no reason. Antibiotics do not affect viral infections. So, if they have a runny nose, a cough, and a bit of a fever, they don't need an antibiotic unless a lab test comes back positive for bacterial infection. The antibiotic 'won't do diddly' for a viral infection.

Exactly. If the kids come down with something, by the time the abx start working, you may be on your way home too. I would suggest wash your hands, wash your hands, and wash your hands. I am not a big fan of unnecessary meds.

Hear is what we do to keep from getting sick:

1~Take Airborne before getting on a plane, and continue to take it during the trip. It is a great product and is all natural.

2~Bring Lysol wipes and wipe down EVERYTHING in the room (don’t forget the phone, TV remote and water and door handles)

3~Bring Lysol spray to clean out the tub

4~Request that housekeeping remove the bedspreads . They are hardly ever changed so they are filled with germs.

5~Bring small bottles off Purell hand sanitizer for each person in your party. They are great you can carry them around the park and use them after each ride.

6~We also bring a first aid kit with any kind of medicine that we may need, Pepto Bismol, cough medicines, Tums, aspirin, band-aides that sort of stuff.

Just as a back up I always get a Z pack from the doctor in case I need it.

If you never heard of Airborne check it out. It is just like taking a Tums and they really work.
