My friend just came back from WDW. This was their first trip (my first trip coming in 8 days).
While she was there her two children both under 8 became very sick with high fever. They did not have a rental car and were staying on disney property.
They called the front desk about their children being very ill. The CM told them that Disney had just contracted a medical group for emergencies like these. They would contact the doc and the doc would come to their room. This group is exclusively for the use of on-property guests.
The doctor showed up. Examined the children- Gave them antibotics and then charged almost $300 per child !!!! for the service. They had to put $600 on their credit card. The medication was $50 each and the remainder of the bill was for the office call.
She said they were in shock. The feel like they may have been able to get a taxi and take the kids to an urgent care and pharmacy cheaper than this..- Anyway now she is having trouble turning into her insurance. She may just be out the $600.

Just thought this was worth sharing incase someone gets sick.

When we were in WDW April 18th-27th my youngest DD 22 months at that time got sick with a double ear infection and a 103.8 fever. I was fortunate though my best friend works at AKL and she told me about a place called "After Hours Pediatrics" they have a shuttle that picks you up and take you to the clinic. They accept 99% of all insurances, and they do only pediatrics. The place was wonderful, clean, and friendly. I only had to pay my $15 co-pay and the rest was covered. I highly recommed them, even over the clinic by crossroads I think that is called Centra Care. I've taken my older daughter to Centra Care they didn't take our insurance I had to wait for 2+hrs and it wasn't as nice. At After Hours Pediatrics I only waited 20 min tops and for kids that is their specialty it really is great, and only paying your co-pay is better.

dlrhine,

Would you have the number to this clinic still? It would be good to just carry w/ our insurance cards. I have 4 kids and that is one my worries.

My 2 yr old was sick before we left. So I went to the Poly concierge desk to see what my options were. The guy there recommonded the drs that come to your room. So I asked the charge and he said $250. I almost fell out of the chair. I then asked about centra care and was told the charge was $160 but I was also told they accept my insurance so thats who we went with. They came right away to pick us up--of course we waited atleast an hour to see the dr and then they stopped at Walgreens so we could get our rx filled (it was ready when we arrived).
After Hours Peds sounds good though, I will have to remember that on our next trip.

I found a site for this group. It looks like great info to print/write down in case they are needed- You never know with kids.

Thanks for the info for "After Hours Pediatrics" and I will write it down and keep it with me for my up and coming trip with the kids.

I am wondering however what the full price is for an office visit? As my insurance doesn't cover office visits. I suppose if it came down to it, I could always call them and ask. The only ins. I have is major medical.

Thanks for the info. Will be putting this info in our planning folder to take with us.

Thanks again.

My dd got a UTI at WDW, just a few weeks ago. The Dolphin (love those extension 66 folks!) put us in touch with East Coast something. I talked to a wonderful person there that wanted to send a doctor to the room. She said the visit was $133 plus labs/meds, which they bring with them. I didn't think that was too bad for a "house call". But, thinking it was a UTI, I asked what happened if she needed lab work the doc didn't carry, and she said they send you to the er.

We ended up just going to the Urgent Care center across from Caribe Royale (we had a car), and they were MARVELOUS. They are in most bc.bs plans, but the total charge (without meds) was $126.

Anyway, I'd recommend both.

The information that mamahauldren posted is for the place I took my DD it was the Hunters Creek one and it only took about 15 min. and they have a shuttle. A regular appointment is about $160-$200 if you don't have insurance that covers dr. appt. I heard them telling the lady that came in behind me. She also only had Major Medical. I can't recommend this place enough, just the speed of it and that they specialize in Peds. Good luck! I have the info with me just in case we'd need it for our Sept. trip.

We were in Disney last December and our infant daughter (then 6 months) and our special needs son both got really sick. We were at the Dolphin and we also called the desk and they suggested calling the medical group who comes to the room. We called them and a Dr came out (He was fantastic ). While he was there we called our Dr back in Ny and they spoke for 10 minutes. Our Dr gave him all the details on DS and they deceided on medication etc. The bill was around $600 for both kids BUT .....we had called our insurance company right after DR. came (his medical group suggested this to us when we spoke to them on the phone to make the appointment) and all we needed was the original bill and perscription receipts. We also had our DR call in a referall AFTER we returned (They can so this up to 1 month after visit). We had a check back from the insurance company in 2 weeks. We have Blue Choice Select. HAve your friend call her insurance and check to see if she can get some of the $ back. I have to say the Dr was FANTASTIC and the perscriptions were delevered to the hotel by Turner drug so it was very convient. I think we ended up paying $50.00 which is our co-pay for hospital visits out of pocket. Hope this helps. My suggestion for anyone traveling is to call your insurance company before you leave and see what you are covered for just in case.

I work for BC/BS of Maryland. I am helping my friend with her insurance bills. If you have BC/BS like I do, then we have to make sure the doctor is in Network with the state you are in to get the best benefits.
For example for WDW the doctor will have to be in network with the local BC/BS of Florida. Most doctors are in network but sometimes they are not and you may end up with a lot of out of pocket expenses.

Just call your insurance before you leave and ask them how YOUR policy works and what to do if you need to seek medical attention while you are on vacation.

as with any part of a WDW vacation it better to be as informed about your options as possible.

Let's just pray none of need a doctor while we are on vacation.

Thanks for all the info !
