Hello All
I hate to even post this because I am praying that everything will be fine but my husband had strep throat last week and now today my son was diagnosed with is also. He is on a 10 day antibiotic and I am very concerned my daughter is going to come down with it while we are there.

I already asked our pediatrician if they could prescribe something just in case but the answer was no.

If she were to come down with it while we are there (we leave to go to disney on 6/13) what do we do? Are there facilities within disney that can help? Or do we have to go off of the grounds? Do these places take regular insurance?

I am sooooo stressed out now. I don't want my trip ruined by someone getting sick...ya know......

I believe there is assistance available to you on grounds. At te very least you could ask at the front desk for direction. Maybe the first aid station's nurses can help you in one of the parks? I know there are pharamacy's that will deliver prescriptions to your hotel, even after hours. I'm sure Disney is set up to deal with medical issues. Try to relax and have a magicl trip.

I didn't see anyone jumping in to answer your question so I will try. I have read that there is a walk-in clinic near WDW. I don't know anymore than that. Perhaps a google will turn up a clinic and a near by pharmacy.

I have to wonder why your ped won't just give you something in case? They are so over cautious.

The place to go is Centra Care near CrossRoads (535 and Hotel Blvd before going to Downtown Disney). We have been there several times due to kids having fever etc. They take regular insurance and they have pharmacy in the building too. You could also ask Disney to get a doctor come to your resort but we have never used it. Hope that helps.

I am very upset that they won't give me something just in case. She did overprescribe the amount of augmentin my son needs, so I guess if I was in a pinch I could give her a few doses of it. She isn't allergic to it because she has taken it several times. But it wouldnt' be a full 10 day course.

Thanks...I just called there and they do take our insurance. That makes me feel a little bit better.

Unfortunately, most doctor's do not distribute antibiotics without the presence of symptoms so I would say your best bet would be to try the walk-in clinic mentioned. You will notice that your son will start feeling better within the first 2-3 days, however, make sure he takes the complete 10 day does. The virius takes the entire does to completely rid the body of the disease. So unless your doctor actually gave you more dose than the 10 day required for your son, you should give him the entire dose and cross your fingers for your daughter. Have her drink some vitamin C to help build up her immune system in the meantime. Good luck with your trip and we all hope for the best for your trip. :thumbsup2

I actually got very sick a few years ago while staying at the Wilderness Lodge. We called down to the front desk and told me that they have service to a clinic - I believe the one mentioned above - and even shuttle you there if needed. The clinic takes almost all insurances and the shuttle picked me up at the front of the hotel, took me to the clinic, came back and took me to the pharmacy right across the street and then back to the hotel. It was great. I actually had caught bronchitis and we didn't have a car so was so glad that Disney was able to shuttle us there - for free : ).

In August 2006 when I was at WDW I happen to get sick and was coughing very bad. My Dad called the Centra Care number and was told if we went to the walk-in clinic it would be at least a 3 hour wait, so instead my parents decided it was worth the $ to have a doctor come to our room at the Contemporary and see me there. He was able to give me a prescription right there without having to get it filed at a Walgreens and eventually I started to get better. Once again there was an extra $ for the prescription however my parents thought it's better getting it right there from the doctor and not having to leave WDW property to get it.

We had to go to the Centra Care Clinic a couple of times during our trip in 2007. First DD (18 months) developed a nasty double ear infection, then later in the week DW developed bronchitis.
Both times there was a bit of a wait, but no more than you would get at any clinic. The staff was nice and took care of us. There is a pharmacy attached to the clinic. However, if you get your prescriptions there, and you have insurance, you still have to pay the full price, then you submit the receipts to the insurance company for reimbursement. And there is a Wallgreens right up the street.
It was convenient for us because we were staying at POFQ and had our own car. But as others have said, Disney will have a doctor make a room call if you need it.

My guess is that by the 13th, she will already show signs if she is gonna get it. The incubation period for strep is less than 2 weeks I think.

While I do not remember the name of the pharmacy, I know there is one that delivers to your resort for a $5 fee. My son got sick a few years back and I called my ped. she listened to his cough over the phone and knowing my son's history called in a prescription to a pharmacy nearby. I asked at Guest Relations and they gave me the phone number.

I can't remember the name of the pharmacy, but there is definitely one that delivers to the resorts. Over the years we have had illness (our doctor called the perscription into this pharmacy) and also once left home and forgot a perscription for DH.

We have HMO insurance, so we paid out of pocket and then filed for reimbursement when we got home. The pharmacy provided the proper receipt with the perscription.

If you're not leaving until the 13th, why not ask your doctor to order a strep test on the 11th (even if your daughter is symptom-free), and see where that leads. We were in a similar situation a few years ago with 3 of 5 already diagnosed and on medication. My health plan had no problem testing the other two -- turned out one was already positive for strep with no symptoms. So we headed off to WDW with four on meds, but everyone feeling fine, and had a great trip.

I hope your trip works out too!

Ok I would try to keep the kids apart she still might not get it. Start with on uping her Vit C strawberries have been good here, get some oranges have her drink plenty of liquids, make sure she is getting enough rest, maybe some tylenol or Advil & if you are flying sudafed type product the day of the flights.

Good Luck & do these things for yourself too. And if either of you do get it I hope your Dr will phone in a scrip for you. Also & I am not trying to stir things up but I find that urgent care centers give out Antibioics a little easier, maybe you could go to one before you leave by your home.

There is a hospital in the next town. I took my son their for a sprained ankle, when we were down there 2 years ago. The hospital had us in and out in under and hour and it was clean. Really clean. They can do a throat culture there and have her on antibotics in no time. May sure she tells you that her throat is starting to feel scratchy then take her. If you get treated early then she would not feel sick and you all can enjoy the rest of the stay. I thought our trip would end when my son broke his ankle but we got a doctors note for him to get a wheel chair and he did just fine.

The hospital is in celebration.

A friend of mine told me her daughter got sick while there and they had a doctor come to their hotel room...that would also be an option!!

I'm presuming you're staying on property. If you do so, just go down (don't CALL DOWN, GO DOWN) to the front desk & ask them for advice/assistance. They'll give you information about the options including clinics, doctors who will make hotel-calls, and also information about pharmacies that deliver. I believe that the one that everybody's blanking on the name of is Turner Drugs. They will deliver to the hotel & will do so for approx. $5. However, they DO NOT take insurance. You will need to pay for the prescription in full and then submit it to your insurance, if you have any. Alternately, if you are renting a car, check out which of the major drug store chains accept your insurance, and use their websites to find the nearest one to the hotel you're staying at (you can get the addresses from http://www.allearsnet.com/acc/faq_hot.htm) so you're prepared if needed.

Anyway, here's hoping that everyone gets well/is well for the trip! Enjoy the Magic!

:worried: If you are staying onsite and don't have a rental, Disney will provide transportation to the clinic mentioned above. It is a very nice clinic.

Disney doesn't have medical care on their property. But you can get doctors to come to your room if you want to shell out the dough for them. There are also several walk-in clinics near Disney.

I had strep a couple weeks ago at WDW. Don't go to Century Medical on the 4000 of Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway. If you want to know why, you can read my review. http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1844749

I came down with a pneumonia once at WDW and went to a walk-in clinic right off the Disney property by DTD. They weren't that hot, either. Acted genuinely surprised to have an honest-to-God sick person. Like they didn't know what to do. :faint:

From now on, I'm going to Celebration hospital. Just gotta find out where that is. :)
