Sick in Disney?

As others have mentioned, you can have a doctor come to your room. We did this a couple of years ago when my husband developed conjunctivitis (pink eye) in both eyes on our way down to DW. We did not have a rental car. So, we opted for the MD to come to our room. They gave us a "window" (of about two hours) of when he would be in our room. This was great because the girls and I could hang out at the pool while DH waited on the doc. The doc came, and $250 later...we had an antibiotic eye drop in hand. Yes...$250 plus $40 for the meds was a bit steep...but well worth it. Also, we filed it on our insurance once we got home and were reimbursed. When my kids have strep, I prefer for them to have a shot instead of antibiotics by mouth. The shots work much faster...usually feel better within 24 hours as opposed to 48 hours with antibiotics. I'm not sure if the doc that makes "house calls" would carry shots or not...but it wouldn't hurt to ask. Hopefully, you won't need any of these services. I would think she would show signs long before you go.

I asked at the front desk at the hotel and they provided me with phone numbers and a map. He also marked the closest Centra Care Clinics on the map and suggested to call to find out wait times. I called the Centra Care Clinic closest to Disney and it would be a three hour wait. I called the next closest and only one person was there waiting. We were in and out in no time. The doctor was good with my child, and we got the prescription filled at a Target near the clinic.

I hope you have a great trip and everyone will be well!

When I was at Disney for Easter, my Dad and me both became very ill. We had to go to Centra Care. When we got there (10 mins. before it opened), the wait time was already an hour wait. They pick up people from the parks and resorts. After we were seen, we got our prescription and went to the Walgreens down the street to fill it. Once we were there, we noticed that this Walgreens has a Urgent Care/ Walk-in Center in the back by the pharmacy. We asked about it and they pharmacist said that they are hardly busy because no one knows about it yet. He stated that this is something new that Walgreens has tried out and that they are planning on putting them in, in more tourist areas. If I would have know, we would have gone there instead. This Walgreens is only about a 5 minute drive from the Centra Care Center near Downtown Disney. They also take insurance. I hope this helps.

Did you have her tested? Although she may not have outward signs she still may have it. Some people can be carriers without actually becoming sick. It may be worth having her looked at before you leave.

Wow I'd be more than a bit upset with my doctor. While it is not necessarily the best thing to do, it makes sense to let you carry an extra prescription with you just in case. When we travel, our doctor always allows us an extra scrip of Z Pack as we almost always get sick when we travel by plane. She knows it, we know it, it just is a reality. It is easier to have it at the ready rather than have to call them, have them locate a local pharmacy where we are on holiday and phone it in. Just makes sense. I know sometimes parents are too quick to overmedicate their kids but in this case it just makes sense to me. An ounce of prevention......

The doctors here just won't treat unless they is an obvious problem that they can look at and diagnosis. My doctor is the same way. I have gone in for sinus problems and been turned away only to have to go back a few days later and be rechecked to get an antibiotic. One time I was passing a kidney stone (it was in my bladder, so it was almost passed) and she wrote me a prescription for 12 tylenol with codeine.....12 that was it. That lasted me a whole day or two....

We had a few trips in a row where someone was sick- ranging from a quick 24 hr bug that only slowed one of us down, strep caught from day care, and even one trip we spend several hrs at the Celebration ER because my DH did a cannonball in into the pool to show off for the kids( I think he forgot he was 40 yr old and 260 lbs!!!) We almost expect something now, and celebrate if everyone is healthy...

The previous posts were right on- transportation available for free to the local "urgent care"( Centra Care), and their Rx does not take insurance- I think it is Walgreens that delivers, but the Wal-Mart is much cheaper-

My best sick story was in 98 when DH had a bug and I was bored( no kids yet), so I wandered down to a DVC presentation( we were staying at the Boardwalk and that is where DVC was selling)- You can guess how this ended- We bought our first round of DVC points- DH still claims he was delirious, but signed on the dotted line anyway!!!!!

My guess is that by the 13th, she will already show signs if she is gonna get it. The incubation period for strep is less than 2 weeks I think.

I agree - if she is going to get it- you should know before you leave

If you will have a car, my recommendation is Afterhours Pediatrics on the corner of Sand Lake and Dr. Phillips. It is about a 15 minute drive from WDW property. As far as I am concerned, it is the best clinic in Orlando (and I've been to quite a few). It is where I take my DD when she is ill. There is usually a fairly short wait (as opposed to the clinics closer to WDW). It has a great atmosphere. There is a rocking chair and television in each patient area. You can pick from a number of children's movies to watch while you wait.

I can't say enough good things about the staff. It opens at 4pm and is open until 1am. They take most forms of insurance.

I am going to be very sad when DD turns 21 and can no longer to to Afterhours Peds.

I just found this site: www.inroommd.com YOu pay a little bit up front and there's a $45 service fee if they come out to your room. I think I may sign up for this. Last year DD got sick 2 hrs before we left for the airport. Was sick for 2 days. Then I got sick for 2 days and then other DD got sick. Her and I overlapped a day. I went to Centra Care and waited..forever. I thought I had something different.

Now DD12 has had a sore throat for 6 days and I have had one for 5 days. No white patches though. DD5 says her throat is scratchy and her nose is stuffy. We leave June 21. So hope everything is either done by then. I'd much rather call a doctor to my room then go out and wait in that very, very busy clinic.

I just wanted to let you know that my family was pleased with CentraCare, the one closest to Downtown Disney, on our visit last week (Memorial Day).

My son developed an infected wound on his leg during our visit. After using the first aid station at the parks, the nurses there referred us to Centra Care. Since we did not have a car, we called and a free shuttle picked us up and took us to the clinic. We waited about 30 minutes as there were a few other patients in the waiting room. Once we saw a doctor, I was very pleased with the care we received. She prescribed an antibiotic, took a culture to send to the lab, and had a nurse clean and bandage his leg. They called us a few days later to inform us that the antibiotic my son was taking was effective for treating his type of infection. So I was very pleased with all aspects of care we received there. We also used Turner Drugs, which is attached to the clinic, to fill the prescription. We received efficient and quick service. We then used the complimentary shuttle service to return back to Downtown Disney where the rest of the family was waiting.

Centra Care charges $225 for the office visit, but accepted payment of $25, which is the copay on my insurance.

I would recommend Centra Care for those needing medical care while on vacation in Orlando.

MY son had strep when we were in Disney for Easter week. We drove to the Centra care center and the place was packed. IMO the place looked awful. The wait was over 4 hours, not what we were told on the phone.

I finally got my pediatrician to phone in a prescription to the CVS pharmacy and then I saw that CVS had one of those minute clinics. (like the idea of the Walgreens walk in center) It was empty. I will go their next time, but we did have a car.

I hope your family feels better before your trip and you guys don't get sick when you go!!!!! Good luck..I had a head cold when we went down for our last trip and Thank God the cold started 2 days befoer we left so by the time we left I was feeling better.

I also saw on another website that someone used Main Street Physicians. 24 hr on call and thay also have a clinc.

407-396-1195 the walk in clinic is at 2901 Parkway Blvd. Suite 3A Kissimme and open from 8a-8p charge is $80 at the clinic. Charge for house call is $175-$200. The www.INroomMD.com looks cheaper.

If we ever get sick again while in WDW I'd rather use one of these 2 places. Centra Care, the people were nice, but the place is soo packed that I'd probably come down with something while there plus I don't want to spend a vacation day sitting in a crowded waiting room.

The CVS or Wal Green clinic sounds interesting. My only question with those is if it's an actual doctor doing the clinic or the pharmacist?

Fortunately, (well..also UNfortunately) just came down with what me & other DD have so it should be over by the time we get to WDW. DH hasn't gotten it yet though.

I got sick when I went to disney last year with band. I left and I couldn't stop coughing, It went all through the night. I also couldn't breathe that great and my nose was all stuffy. We stayed at the pop century music resort and I went to the nurse's station and I was diagnosed with strep.
