This is our first DL trip without a car rental. There will be 2 adults and 2 kids and I am trying to decide which is more cost effective? I hate when I am on a shuttle driving all over the earth to different hotels so if it's "close" I'd rather take a cab. Thoughts?

If you are staying at a hotel or somewhere with free or cheap parking consider sticking with renting a car.

The shuttles from the airport can cost up to 20 dollars a person. I know a cab cost us about 45 from LGB once not sure what it costs from SNA..

Our last trip a rental car was just under 50 bucks for 3 days and a shuttle would have cost the same...

If your hotel has free parking it would probably be cheapest to get an economy rental car. The Disneyland Express bus goes from SNA, it is $80 RT for up to 5 people, but that is still $20 pp since you only have 4. A taxi would probably be less than that. LGB has flat rate taxis from the airport to any DL area hotel but it is $5-10 more on the way back to the airport. SNA is closer to DL though so I would imagine the taxis will be cheaper.

Thanks to everyone. I found some cheap car rental rates on Hotwire so even though I didn't want to deal with renting a car, it may be nicer and cheaper to get one. :)

There are different types of shuttles.

For SNA airport

We tried the "walk up" shuttle run by the taxi company. As we walked up, the only other person in the shuttle got out and was complaining about the wait. We sat in the shuttle for about 2-3 minutes when I realized that the shuttle wasn't going to leave until it was full. We got out and I asked when the shuttle would leave, and I was told 5 minutes. This just confirmed for me that they needed more people and the 5 minutes was just a hook to keep me.

Then they didn't want to give me my suitcases. So I had to open the rear door on the van and get them myself. The whole time they kept trying to convince me to use their shuttle. At that exact moment the Disneyland Bus showed up and we hopped on and it left immediately

For 2 people the Disneyland Bus is cheaper, for 3 or more a Taxi is cheaper. But after my daugher got sick in the middle of the night and we had to wait for a Taxi, now we rent a car.

If you use priceline for a rental car, be sure and get a receipt for the gas when you fill it up. The car rental agent tried to charge me for gas based on the mileage we drove, until I showed a gas receipt. It seems they don't use the gas gauge of the car to determine if you put gas in it. This has never happened when I rented directly from the car rental companies.
