Shutter/mirror noise?

A while ago I was taking pictures at a choir concert and it just so happened that I squeezed one off during that split second between the end of the song and the beginning of the applause. I know it was partly the situation but wow did that "click" seem loud at the time (I got the evil eye from Mrs Thurl)

My solution was to dig out the old Canon S3 for the next show, even though the image quality is not what it would be. So are there any other options? I have a Canon XSi.

Since you did not make noise during the actual performance I claim "no foul". Try firing off a shot on remote to see how loud it seems at a short distance, it may not be much to someone more than a few feet away.

My latest answer is micro 4/3, no mirror means a lot less noise.

The other option is a sound blimp, like photographers use on movie sets to kill the noise from thier cameras. But they cost more than your body did so it's probably not the best option for you.

It seems like a big thunder boom to you, but it's really not. I use my 50D all through my DD's choir concerts and my dad used his Canon A-1 through mine in jr. high/ high school (now that camera has a loud mirror). No one has ever even looked at me funny because of the noise. Next time you're at a concert look around and see who else has a DSLR and see if you hear them. Then tell Mrs. Thurl that in 20 years she's gonna be really glad you have those great shots you took with your DSLR and it's worth a little click in the silence. but buy her jewelry first... we're more agreeable when you buy us jewelry first.
