We ate at Shula's last Friday night! We knew from the online menus that it would be expensive, so I figured what I thought was high, and budgeted $150 for the two of us.

When we got there, we sat in the comfortable chairs in their waiting area while we waited for our friends to show up. While we were sitting there, they asked us if we wanted a glass of wine while we waited! No charge! Nice touch! (Of course I said yes. ;) )

We were led to our table toward the back of the restaurant. Very nice inside - dark, with lots of football pictures on the walls, white tablecloths and candles.

They put a football on one of the plates with the "menu" printed on it. No prices - just a shortened version of their menu. More for fun than anything. Then, they place your napkins in your lap for you (I love that! :teeth: )

Our waiter suggested that the chef arrange an appetizer sampler for us consisting of: stone crab claws, oysters rockafeller, lobster tail, and bbq shrimp. We agreed that we would try it. Well, instead of putting together a platter for the table, they walked around the table placing each individual piece on our plates for us! (Right about now, we're thinking we may be a teensy bit over our budget...)

The lobster and bbq shrimp were very good. The stone crab had no taste, and the oysters were just ok.

Then, they gave us each a steamed towel to wipe our fingers on (I love that too :teeth: )

Next, dh ordered the beefsteak tomato salad. I had a few bites. The tomatoes weren't very good. Probably the wrong time of year for fresh tomatoes.

For dinner dh and I both ordered the "small" porterhouse (24 oz). He ordered the baked potato and I ordered the house specialty - creamed spinach. The steak was the best steak I've ever had!! It was done perfectly (med-rare)! DH said his potato was very good, and I loved the creamed spinach.

For dessert, we split the Chocolate Souffle for Two. I'm sure it was good, but by then I was so full that I couldn't really enjoy it! LOL!

Now came the fun part - the bill! We were shocked to see that our "appetizer sampler" came to $84!!!!! THE MOST expensive appetizer we've ever seen!!! So, with tip, I ended up writing out a check for $252 (for just the two of us)! This was definitely the most expensive meal we've ever eaten! Especially since my wine was free, and dh just had an ice tea!

But, the meal was fantastic, the restaurant was very nice, and the waiters were wonderful! No complaints at all about the service - it was top notch! So, I would recommend it to others, and I know we will go again, with a few changes. We wouldn't order the "recommended" appetizer, lol. And, we would skip the salad. The side dishes are so huge, that we would split one next time. (We would just have to fight about if it's a potato or spinach! LOL) If we just each had a steak and split the side dish, we would enjoy the dessert much more! ::yes:: And, the bill would probably come to around $140 with tip.

Any questions?

Thanks Rhonda, I've always had this on my "list" to try, but just couldn't get over spending a couple hundred on the meal. Now I know how to do it for a little less, and not to order so much food. I really appreciate the review!!!;)

An $84.00 APPETIZER!?!?!

I think I might have been peeved. If the waiter is offering a special then I would assume it to be in line with the rest of the appetizer offerings... yikes! I'm really glad you enjoyed it, but to me it sounds a little shady.. :(

The rest of the meal sounded wonderful!! :D

We celebrated our anniversary at Shula's last March. Wen we saw the size of the steaks, we asked if we cold split one and our server told us we could and probably should split everything! There was a ten dollar charge for an extra plate, but we went away ver satisfied. The $84 appetizer was more than we paid for steak, potato, and the tomato salad and the chocolae souffle. But I'm glad you enjoyed your dinner.

You know, when I read about things like this $84 appitizer I wonder about one thing..

You don't know the price cause it isn't on the menu.. so, is it tacky to ask? How would you phrase it?

CoolDisneyCat: We thought about that too. But, we thought it might look tacky to ask. After all, if we were in such a nice (and expensive) restaurant, we shouldn't have to ask about prices.

"No thank you" is how I would phrase it. If they don't mention a price, it's usually because you won't buy it if they do. If you absolutely have to know, a simple "And the price is...?" will do. Of course "lobster tail", "oysters rockefeller", and "stone crab" are big clues that the price is going be sky-high.

Great review, Rhonda! I don't know if I will ever eat at Shula's, but it's fun to read about it!

Ah--the old saying comes to mind:

"If you have to ask the price, you probably can't afford it".

I can understand how you can be overcome by the "moment" and not ask the price. At Shula's you could figure it would be high--but never would I have thought $84.

But hey--you DID get a free glass of wine!!

Wondering--how many were in your party that nite??

$84 for an appetizer (faint!)

I'm glad you enjoyed your dinner - yowza that is some sticker shock!!!!! I don't think I'll show Ross your post. I'd never convince him to eat there otherwise! :teeth:

Whoa----$84 for an appetizer! Yikes!

That sort of happened to us while dining at the Chart House one evening- we were with friends and the waiter suggested an appetizer of their coconut shrimp, lobster egg rolls and something else that I forget....we were like "Sure, why not!"

Yeah, it was a $35 appetizer.

Much more reasonable than an $84 appetizer, but it was shocking at the time! I was thinking it was going to be about $20 as it was just a few of each thing- not as many as you would get in a full appetizer.

Live and learn!

I'm glad you enjoyed your steak- we thought their beef was phenomenal too!

AFAIC, it's never tacky to ask how much something is when you're the one who is paying :).

Our experience at Shula's was mixed. My DH's porterhouse was excellent and my fillet was dry. They removed the steak from the bill and it was still over $120! The staff was so gracious about everything, that we *will* be returning on our next trip :). As an added plus, the Dolphin Club is FREE for your children while you dine! My DD had a blast there :).

Thanks for the review! My husband wants to eat here when we are in WDW for our 20th anniversary this coming spring. I will have to remember not to accept the waiter's recommendations for an appetizer without asking a few questions first! Still, it sounds like the food was wonderful, so I am now looking forward to a meal here!

I'm not one to balk at an expensive meal, but $84 for an appetizer?:earseek:

DH and I did Shula's in NYC....

We each had a caesar salad and split a steak. (We're doing Atkins.)

And managed to get fresh berries and whipped heavy cream for dessert. Of course I had water with lemon, and DH had coffee.

Our bill with tip was about $90 or so. And well worth it!!

Update: DH found the Shula's charge for our dinner...... it was $95 including tip. The only thing I'd change is to have them put less dressing on the salad.

Yep, stone crabs are mega expensive.

An order of 4 to 6 claws cost $40 to $70 at Joe's Stone Crab in Miami depending on the size of the claws!

I assume each person got one claw? So, I would estimate at least $10 - $12 per claw. Then you had the lobster tail, etc. Yep, pricey!!

Although the appetizer price of $84 seems shocking, when you sit down and think about it, it is really in line with the other prices on their menu.
The lobster tail alone probably costs $40-$50. I can't remember the exact price quoted when we were there in October, but I remember our table declining it because it was so much.
All of their other appetizers easily begain at $8 dollars each, so when you add it all up, the $84 price tag seems about right.
I can imagine your reaction. My face would have looked like this:
:earseek:

I recall some "appetizer shock" at Flying Fish last year--$15.00 for 3 scallops.

Great review!!

I experienced Shula's for the first time in October and I loved it!!

I knew going in that it would be expensive, but since I'm a 'steak and potato' kinda guy, I didn't worry about the little extras that tend to add up.

Shula's is one of those places that is well worth the expense.

MY DW and me along with our two kids ate there two weeks ago, the food was fantastic but they dont have a kids menu (I guess they are trying to us something) it all worked out well because my 3 yr old slept the entire meal, and my 7 yr old wanted chicken strips something that was not offered on the menu. The waiter who was great saw my sons disappointment so he suggested that we go to Tubbis Cafe and pick up the Chicken strips, so that was what I did, when i brought them back the waiter took them from me and served them to my son like it was a five star meal, I tell you chicken strips never looked so good. The staff and food was great and we also got the souffle that was unbelievable
