We ate at Shula's last Friday night! We knew from the online menus that it would be expensive, so I figured what I thought was high, and budgeted $150 for the two of us.
When we got there, we sat in the comfortable chairs in their waiting area while we waited for our friends to show up. While we were sitting there, they asked us if we wanted a glass of wine while we waited! No charge! Nice touch! (Of course I said yes.
)
We were led to our table toward the back of the restaurant. Very nice inside - dark, with lots of football pictures on the walls, white tablecloths and candles.
They put a football on one of the plates with the "menu" printed on it. No prices - just a shortened version of their menu. More for fun than anything. Then, they place your napkins in your lap for you (I love that!
)
Our waiter suggested that the chef arrange an appetizer sampler for us consisting of: stone crab claws, oysters rockafeller, lobster tail, and bbq shrimp. We agreed that we would try it. Well, instead of putting together a platter for the table, they walked around the table placing each individual piece on our plates for us! (Right about now, we're thinking we may be a teensy bit over our budget...)
The lobster and bbq shrimp were very good. The stone crab had no taste, and the oysters were just ok.
Then, they gave us each a steamed towel to wipe our fingers on (I love that too
)
Next, dh ordered the beefsteak tomato salad. I had a few bites. The tomatoes weren't very good. Probably the wrong time of year for fresh tomatoes.
For dinner dh and I both ordered the "small" porterhouse (24 oz). He ordered the baked potato and I ordered the house specialty - creamed spinach. The steak was the best steak I've ever had!! It was done perfectly (med-rare)! DH said his potato was very good, and I loved the creamed spinach.
For dessert, we split the Chocolate Souffle for Two. I'm sure it was good, but by then I was so full that I couldn't really enjoy it! LOL!
Now came the fun part - the bill! We were shocked to see that our "appetizer sampler" came to $84!!!!! THE MOST expensive appetizer we've ever seen!!! So, with tip, I ended up writing out a check for $252 (for just the two of us)! This was definitely the most expensive meal we've ever eaten! Especially since my wine was free, and dh just had an ice tea!
But, the meal was fantastic, the restaurant was very nice, and the waiters were wonderful! No complaints at all about the service - it was top notch! So, I would recommend it to others, and I know we will go again, with a few changes. We wouldn't order the "recommended" appetizer, lol. And, we would skip the salad. The side dishes are so huge, that we would split one next time. (We would just have to fight about if it's a potato or spinach! LOL) If we just each had a steak and split the side dish, we would enjoy the dessert much more!
And, the bill would probably come to around $140 with tip.
Any questions?
