Shrimp and grits

I don't know what is authentic because I am not from a region where this is a specialty but I had them both at narcoossees and Coral Reef. Narcoossees was just ok (part of that is the shrimp were burned but even so I think they would have been just ok) but they were delicious at coral reef. When I make them at home I use Bobby Flay's recipe, this was not completely unlike that.

Homecoming's is tomato based, which is not the way I prefer them... I think even among the south, different regions have different versions.

Shrimp and grits was a dish originating from Muskogee Indian tribes, but in the sense that they cooked many foods with grits. It became a breakfast dish cooked in homes across the south. The notoriety began in a restaurant in Chapel Hill, NC when a NY Times writer ate there and published the recipe. That original recipe did contain cheddar and parmesan cheese grits as a base with shrimp, bacon and mushrooms as the main accompaniments. After that popularity was gained and it started appearing at fine restaurants as well. The main variations of notability were in Charleston, SC with spicier versions with tasso gravy and cajun flavors and in New Orleans, LA with the addition of barbeque sauce. There are infinite variations of the dish and choosing one to call traditional or original would be argumentative at best. Read the descriptions and try what seems to appeal to you the most. As for me, I prefer to try them all because I find all the variations delicious with each having their own appeal. I've had them across the south with the better variations tending to be states with a significant coastline. I've also had them across Disney and if you want something more "traditional" I would stick with descriptions that are based on the three I mentioned.

I think in most people's minds the first one they ate and liked is their traditional. Because I suspect there are no 2 recipes alike. Heck, I didn't find the 2 at the PO resorts the same.

Haven't read all the comments, but casting my vote for Art Smith's Homecoming. Amazing! We already have them down for our first meal next trip!

it's true. I think I had it first at a restaurant near colonial williamsburg over 15 years ago and that was what was in my head when I went looking for a recipe. Bobby Flay's was closest, and also Coral Reef's is quite similar as well.

My DH loves the shrimp and grits at Bluezoo. They are an appetizer there. The next time we go he is going to see if he can get them as an entree. He says that might be one of the best things he's had at DW!!!

I don't know about authentic, but the Shrimp and Grits at the Boathouse at Disney Springs was amazing.

Loved the shrimp and grits at Grand Floridian Cafe. So good, that I ordered just the grits to go!

I'll throw in a vote for Boatwrights at the Riverside. I can't say if they are the most authentic, but they were delicious when we were there in Sept! Wouldn't hesitate to order a again - not for a second.
