You're so lucky!!

A quick little tip for you. Around 11 pm on Saturday the Oasis will (should) have a close encounter with the Allure. And you'll be on the happier ship since the Allure will be within a mere 6 or 7 hours from being back from their cruise and you'll just be getting started. I don't want to go too far into detail as it would be a spoiler to the TR, but keep a lookout. I don't know if they'll make an announcement of this happening on the Oasis, but they didn't on the Allure. It was quite a surprise to us. Quite a thrill actually, but all I kept thinking was, those lucky jerks! That's the "G" rated version of what I was thinking!

BTW- The passing was on the starboard side of both ships.

This was really cool- we had no idea- I just looked up and happened to see a REALLY big ship with lots of bright lights right outside our balcony. It took a few minutes to realize it was Oasis. Thought it was Freedom actually at first. But all of a sudden she was just RIGHT THERE HUGE and it was obvious it was Oasis! then by the time we got the kids over to our room and I got out the camera, she was much further away.

The pictures I have aren't great and I will post them later but it was much closer to midnight. In fact they were taken at 11:52 PM.

Wow! The Boardwalk and the Pool Deck are so beautiful at night! What time were you out in the pool that evening? It looks nice and uncrowded!

Believe it or not, it was still really early. The pics were taken between 9 and 9:30 PM. There is plenty of empty pool real estate pretty much anytime after 6 or 7 PM. It's the strangest thing how it empties out!

Are kids allowed in the cantilevered (sp?) hot tubs? I thought those were in the solarium. I know my 10 year old DD would love it

No, the cantilevered tubs are not in the Solarium, they are just outside of the glass doors on Allure and Oasis...

BUT

Technically kids under 16 are still not supposed to be in them. It says so on the sign posted there. Yes, I know we broke the rules but we were the only ones out there so I figured no harm, no foul. If anyone would have walked up we would have gotten them out, but nobody did! It was just us and the tumbleweeds!

Quick question about the tween clubs on Allure. Do they allow the 12 - 14 year old kids in with the 15 - 17 year olds, or is there a clear divide between these two age groups?

Eh, not really. They do have activities that can separate the groups but participation in those activities is not mandatory so I would think kids of all ages in the 12-17 range are able to mingle if they are just hanging out.

I have a cruise booked on Allure for 2013 and my son will be 12 when we sail. I know RCI used to separate these two age groups, but now it looks like with some activities, they'll be together with the 15 - 17 year olds. Can you give a bit more information about this? With my son being a 'young' 12 year old when we sail, I clearly wouldn't want him to be around the older teens and I'm a bit freaked out by it. As a back-up, I also made a reservation for the Disney Fantasy in 2013 as well, as I know for sure with Disney, my DS will be in Edge with the 11 - 13 year olds, which is separate from the older teens in Vibe.

What was your experience with this on Allure? Thanks!

Our son chose to stay down in the 11 and under group (he turned 12 a couple of weeks after the cruise) so we don't really know firsthand how it was handled in Fuel/ The Living Room. He loved the Edge on DCL so much we were willing to let him move up if he wanted to and they would have let him but once you decide to move up you can't go back and he preferred to just be the "Big Man on Campus" in the Voyagers.

I absolutely share your sentiments and am not really sure how much club time my daughter (who will also just have turned 12 in '13) will be getting on Allure next time. I do NOT like that they will be in there with the much older kids (especially the younger girls). I wish we had some experience to share with you, but since both stayed down in the younger club this time I don't know.

So like I said, although some effort appears to be made to keep the activities separate and encourage more age-relevant grouping for sure there is still the chance for the groups to mingle together. Some activities are for both (one thing in particular is the Flowrider time- the teens get specific flowrider times, also the movies and some dance classes if I recall right were for all of the teen ages together. Of course those have staff, but...

Your response has helped me quite a bit, so THANK YOU! I had a feeling that on Allure they allowed these two age groups to 'mingle' during certain activities, and I'm not too keen with that. I asked my DS is he preferred Allure or Fantasy, and he said "Fantasy". That really surprised me as I thought for sure he'd pick Allure. Go figure! Well, I've got a little under 2 years to decide if we'll go with Fantasy or Allure.....decisions, decisions. Fantasy will be our first Disney cruise and when I compared the price of Fantasy to Allure and Freedom of the Seas (our other choice), Fantasy came out less than both Allure and Freedom - shocker! It seems that no other cruise ship can compare to Allure and Oasis, but admittedly, I'm drawn to the Fantasy and my first experience with a Disney magical cruise vacation.

I am loving reading all about your cruise and the comparisons!

My first comment is on the sail away party. It was not nearly as crowded in front of the performers compared to pictures I've seen on DCL. Is that because the area is bigger and/or people are scattered more on different decks?

I loved watching the video of the zip line. What a scary experience for you tho! I'd love to try it but it seems so short - but better than nothing, right? I love all of the exciting things to do onboard the Allure versus what was offered when I went on my one and only cruise back in 2001 (aboard the Grand Princess).

My second comment is on how you enter the ship. I think I prefer entering a grand room rather than a shopping mall. The mall area is beautiful but when I think of entering a ship, I think of the ambience of a grand entrance area. Did you think the DCL has a better set up? (I can't recall if you said so)

Can't wait to read more! I was telling my 2 youngest sons I wish I could hit the lottery so we could go on a cruise! If I were to go alone or with my kids (who are all grown), I think we would enjoy the Allure more. If I went by myself, I might try DCL (esp for an Alaska adventure).

Monday September 19- Day 2- Nassau

Welcome to Monday!

We had already docked in Nassau when Ron awoke before sunrise this morning.

His first stop was Starbucks for a latte, which he enjoyed on the balcony as the sun rose over the Atlantis Resort.

If you're curious, it's a full service Starbucks!

We had no real set plans for the port today. We have been here twice before and since the itinerary only calls for a half day stop we decided not to do an excursion and instead take advantage of hopefully a less populated ship. We would go ashore for a brief time to do a bit of shopping though.

Ok, for real I'm not a huge fan of Nassau. It's a like 30% BTDT, 30% what-are-we-going-to-do-in-a-half-day-anyway? and 30% check out-the-ship-while-everyone's-gone! The biggest bummer is that a lot of things (Zip Line, Flowriders did not open until later when most folks would be back onboard anyway. I've never been much of a conspiracy theorist but dang- it's like they did that on purpose to try and encourage people to get OFF the ship.

We had left the Room Service breakfast card out the evening before, and right on time the phone rang, warning us of its’ upcoming delivery. We weren’t too impressed. The portions we small- we had asked for 3 orders of bacon, we got 3 slices of bacon. The OJ tasted weird, like the concentrate wasn’t diluted properly, and the pastries were cold.

Not to mention the strange grilled tomatoes. I’m all for some garnish and pretty presentation but it became a running joke throughout the week how many dishes were garnished with a grilled halved tomato. From Chops all the way to Room Service Breakfast, those tomatoes were everywhere. Oh you think I'm kidding? It might be perverse but I really want to know how many boxes of tomatoes they went though in garnish alone. In fact I DARE you to try and find a meal on this ship NOT served with an evil halved grilled tomato.

Since the breakfast we ordered was so blah, Ron and the older kids ran downstairs to the Boardwalk Donut shop to fetch me something to eat instead. A few tips about the Donut Shop- there are some coffee dispensers out in the morning so if you want a donut and coffee in the morning, you are in luck. All other times of the day/evening there are no free drinks out on the Boardwalk. Donuts are not always replenished- if you see it, and you want it- get it!

We tried a variety- the cinnamon sugar, strawberry glazed, jelly, and what we thought was a chocolate iced Boston Cream (turns out it had no cream inside). The general consensus was we thought the donuts were very good! They were soft and very tasty, not at all cold or frozen. They seemed very fresh. My favorite was the cinnamon sugar.

We dropped the kids off at their respective AO clubs: the 9-11 Voyagers for the older two, and the 3-5 Aquanauts for Sarah. Brendan and Savannah were delighted to find the kids from the pool the evening before in their club, and Sarah was excited to get on the slide, so everyone went happily into the club so we could venture out for a quick shopping trip.

On the way down Ron and I stopped by Park Café to fill up my bottle with iced tea to take ashore with us.

My fave restaurant!

I was pretty disappointed to discover you can’t get iced tea in the morning- they replace it in the dispenser with apple juice. I guess that makes sense but I was hoping onboard this ship iced tea would be easier to get. It is- between the hours of say 12 PM and 6 PM (at Park Café.) Windjammer is not as convenient to get to (and it’s pre-glassed there), and Wipeout Café has such limited hours. If you like iced tea, like I do, be aware it is the concentrated “fountain” iced tea- which isn’t horrid, I can drink it-when the mix is right. Problem is the mix seemed to never be right. More often than not it was super strongly concentrated and bitter. Just undrinkable. Even sometimes in the dining room. I got frustrated and eventually stocked up on tea bags from Café Promenade, and brewed my own and poured it over ice from the ice bucket. Aah. That- was much better!

One other tip in that regard- Park Café has an actual ice machine, so if you need some ice during the daytime hours, stop by there. Of course when they get really busy there are times it didn’t keep up with demand.

Central Park is just so beautiful! Can you imagine if it had been left as the original design: just a plain rolling hill?

So we were finally ready to head into town. It’s very simple, just push the gangway button on the elevator and it takes you to the floor you need to be on. Swipe your Sea Pass, and off you go!

A little perspective:

Crowds were pretty heavy right by the ship. A lot of photo ops going on, both with the ship’s photographers and just passengers photographing each other.

We took a few of those shots, too!

To get into Nassau, there is along walkway up the pier. They have fixed this up a bit since the last time I was here. They have divided the walkway into a pedestrian side, (this one with the coverings), and one side for shuttles and golf carts. Of course people wanted to walk on the uncovered shuttle side, LOL.

The crowds get ferreted through the welcome/security building and you emerge on the other side. All of the shopping is within a few block range right in this area. We headed to Hard Rock, didn’t find much, continued up the street and looked in a few shops at things. Ron was looking at getting a new pair of cheap sunglasses, so we were shopping those, not finding much he liked. In one store we were going to buy Sarah a doll, but they didn’t have change.

So we kept going and found ourselves at Senor Frogs, can you believe the bar wasn’t open yet? It was 10 AM! Ha!

So we did find a couple of things there, and came out and found ourselves head on with the Straw Market- but it was out in the street!

Now this isn’t our first Rodeo in Nassau and the Straw Market was quite an experience for our first cruise. We’d been there, done that, and didn’t have much desire to do it again (no matter how much Sarah might have liked a tiny straw Hello Kitty purse with cocked eyes for just $20.) But the very first table across the street had some decent looking fake Oakley’s. Ron found a pair he liked, did a little price negotiating, and we were on our way. Repairs we going on inside what was left of the Straw Market’s tent structure. As you can see here, Hurricane Irene pretty much shredded it.

So the way back to the boat was through the Straw Market. I will say, I don’t know if it’s being out in the sun or heat or what but not many of the shopkeepers were very aggressive this time. When it was in the tent- first of all the path was so narrow you had to turn sideways to walk through-you couldn’t take a step without “Lady what you want” this “Or hey you want one of these” You could actually browse now for the most part. We found another one of the dolls we wanted to get Sarah but the price was supposedly $20 for the same doll we were going to pay $12.50 for in the other store. Ron got her down to $18 but she wasn’t budging and that was really overpriced. So I mentioned one of her smaller dolls but they really weren’t into playing the price game here, so we moved along, and instead bought Sarah a cute monkey shaped maraca.

After the long walk back through the flea market, we were ready to get back onboard and enjoy the awesome ship with lighter crowds. It took a few minutes to get through the security screening trailer (even belts had to come off! geesh!) but getting back onboard was fairly quick.

The Central Park area is gorgeous!!! And those donuts look fabulous! So odd about the iced tea, but great idea to stock up on teabags and brew your own. Will have to commit that one to memory.

It’s pretty funny that they gave out the medals like candy at the kids’ club but make the Adults do all kinds of crazy things to get one!

We headed down to the Boardwalk Dog House for lunch (after a quick stop for drinks in Park Café. You have to be coordinated like that, remember!).

After lunch we headed down to the Amber Theater for the showing of Kung Fu Panda 2 in 3D. wE had purposely not seen this movie in the theater knowing it would probably be shown on the boat during our cruise.

I thought the movie itself was not too bad. I didn‘t fall asleep and that is more than I can say for other movies I’d seen onboard cruise ships(*cough*Wall-E*cough cough*). As far as the theater, we found it quite comfortable. The sound was very good without being too loud and the 3-D glasses/effects worked very well. The kids really enjoyed it.

Wow! That's terrific! Definitely price around. Sometimes you can get good price drops on Freedom, Allure and Oasis the pirces seem to just keep going up and up like DCL.

It seems that no other cruise ship can compare to Allure and Oasis, but admittedly, I'm drawn to the Fantasy and my first experience with a Disney magical cruise vacation.

Yes, the Aquatheater is quite large and can handle big volumes of people but on RCCL - their ships don't tradionally haven't had a 'real' sailaway party like DCL until Allure/Oasis- so people like to line the upper deck and watch the actual sailling away (the party goes on at the same time as actual sailing, so that's why we chose to be where we were and could do both!) If you see in the Port Everglades webcam video linked to youtube the upper decks people are slid in there like sardines.

Yes, it is fast (8 seconds or so). Fun to try once. Or more, if you're up to it! Even I would do it again!

Well I do prefer DCL's entrance into the ship. Haven't been on the Dream yet, but I think the new Atrium is just gorgeous! But what really wins it for me is the announcement and the applause welcoming your family. On RCCL you just walk on, and that's it. On DCL it is so very special. I think the areas on both cruise lines that you embark into are beautiful, I do like the promenade a lot. as well.... But yes Disney gets the edge there, IMO.

Yes! On Independence (Freedom class) it can be harder to come by ice. They will fill your bucket in your room twice daily but it is hard to find anywhere else. The ice machine was so great for this purpose!

Of course on Disney that isn't a concern at all.

They have canned sodas and bottled waters, etc. for purchase. They do try to trick you that way. No free beverages on the Boardwalk with the exception of coffee at BW Donuts in the AM. So you have to plan ahead and bring it with if you don't want to get stuck being thirsty, or worse...paying...LOL

But Central Park is just 2 decks straight up (or Promenade 2 decks down).

Oh and it tasted a whole lot better. Being an iced tea FREAK I am accustomed to places having the fountain stuff, (even the DCL drink station has it) but this stuff usually tasted worse than any other fountain tea I'd had. Just a bad mix. Too concentrated and bitter. In one of the pictures it actually looks like wine in my glass it was so thick!

Occasionally it was OK. I know on the Magic and Wonder at least they do serve brewed tea int he dining rooms. I hope they continue to do so on the Fantasy!

TOTALLY agree- I HATED the Straw Market the first time around, just felt like we could not escape them, it was so tight in that tent. it was amazing the sheer amount of square footage the booths took up all spread out on the 'streets like that, it went on and on and ON! But it was nice that they didn't bother to holler at you much this time. I guess you're just too far away! Haha!!!

Oh no, not usually. They are a little bit cheaper than the Oceanview balconies. There are some back towards the aft of the ship but not totally aft where you can overlook the Boardwalk plus see the Aquatheater and a little bit of the ocean too! price generalizations can be hard because they have like 10,000 room categories. LOL!

The hot tub is very cool!

Yes it sure is!!! I think that was the only time we were in that one for the whole cruise. I know I have more pics of it though. We spent the most time in the hot tub in the H20 zone- yes, the kids get one just for them! Sarah called it the "Hot Bath"
