Need some help here folks.

Having bathroom redone. Can't make a decision between getting glass shower doors or sticking with shower curtain. Like the idea of clear glass doors as window is in the shower and it would make the tiny bathroom appear bigger but...... don't want to be a slave to keeping the glass clean. Also I've read stories on the internet about spontaneous shattering of the shower door glass (checked with the plumbing supply store and my saleswoman has also hear of this happening). Also l I ike the idea of the shower curtain because as the one window is inside the shower there cannot be any window treatment and so the only real color in the room would come from the shower curtain. If it helps I'm going with old fashioned style, pedestal sink, white subway tiles and whiteish small octagon floors.

So in the end..... Doors or Curtain? and why... Thanks!

I have 2 full baths, a curtain in one, a door in the other. As far as ease of cleaning, it is much easier to clean the curtain. Just throw it in the washer. With the door, it doesn't matter how much I clean it, it still gets buildup. Every spring I take the doors outside, lay them flat, pour white vinegar in top to loosen the buildup. The buildup comes off very easily but still is much more work than a curtain.

I have glass doors in both bathrooms at home (stall shower). We have had them for about 7 years if not 8 at this point and they still look great. One of the things is that we don't have any little kids living in the house (my sister and I were both in high school). I know that my parents use a squeegee in their bathroom after their showers to "wipe" down the walls but their entire shower is enclosed in glass (2 out of the 4 walls) while our bathroom is only 1. My sister and I never squeegeed (ok maybe in the very beginning once in awhile :rotfl: ) and i think that the doors look fine. They get wiped with glass cleaner once a week when the bathroom is cleaned. We use the handle to open the door so our hand prints are not all over them either.

I have a shower curtain in my apartment and I like it but I find they need to be replaced every year and a half or so because they get nasty. It's also a pain in the neck to clean the plastic sheeting which gets moldy unless you are going to take the time to wipe the plastic down.

I hate the sliding glass doors because of the tracking and only one half can be opened at a time (sometimes you just need more room!).

My .02 :goodvibes

I prefer glass. There are shower sprays you use after every shower, and it keeps the glass looking clear and brand new! I swear by them.

I think the doors are easier to clean. We have VERY hard water so I have soap scum like crazy - all I do is completely douse the doors and walls with Scrubbing bubbles - let it sit for 5 minutes- spray again and wipe down with a sponge I don't even have to scrub. Everything comes out VERY sparkly :)

I just despise shower curtains. :)

If you want color in the room you can do it on the walls :)

I really really really hate my glass shower enclosure. Hate it. I would much rather have a pretty curtain with a liner. If you pull the curtain closed after your finished it will dry without mildewing (at least this has been our experience with DD's bathroom. That liner has been there for nearly 5 yrs. It's getting time to replace it soon, but has been just fine to this point). We have a pretty curtain, and a $1.99 liner. So much easier.

I feel clausterphobic with a shower door. I like to take baths and enjoy the freedom of the open air. I know you can keep the door open, but it's just not open enough for me. When i moved I opted to have a bathtub/shower with a shower curtain.

I much prefer shower doors to shower curtains. We just wipe them down when we are done with out showers. It just takes a minute of 2. This helps to keep control of the "water spots" that make it hard to clean.

Glass shower doors!!! We just use one of the sprays and they really look brand new all the time. If you have a light in you shower it really looks lovely behind the glass.
The glass also goes with every decor..shower cutains are moldy and germy!!!

I did have a glass one shatter on me once, and it was a huge mess to clean up. Bazillions of tiny pieces of glass everywhere. That was a while ago, though. They may have made vast improvements in the safety of them by now, but I've gone with the mildew resistant liners and shower curtains since then.

I hate shower doors on shower/bath combos. I like the fact that a curtain can open all the way, as opposed to a door that only slides halfway. and if you have young children, or plan to have kids, leaning over the tub to bathe them while a shower door track sticks into your side, well, is a pita.

in our current house we have a separate tub and shower, and with the stand alone shower we have a glass door. I love that! so I guess my answer would be, a door on a stand alone shower, and a curtain on a shower/tub combo.

I had a terrible, worst-fear-come-true-shower-door-track accident (ER visit and all) when I was a little girl. So, I don't think I could handle having one in my house. But, I would think they would be nicer to keep clean, in the long run. I just change my shower curtain liner often.

We have frosted glass doors in one bathroom and a curtain in the other. While I loved the look of the doors initially, they have been IMPOSSIBLE to keep clean. I have tried everything on them, and just cannot keep up with the (presumably) soap scum.

I'm getting ready to try the Mr Clean Magic Eraser out of shher desperation. I'm afraid it will scratch the glass, but the doors look so awful with the soap scum!

I recently changed from shower doors to a curtain and when I puuled up those bottom tracks I was horrified at the gross moldy mess it under there. I always took the doors off and gave them a good scrubbing a few times a year but you can't take the track off. Whe nI took it up to get rid of the doors oh my god it was SO disgusting!!!!! Just seeing that will make me never have shower doors again!

Try using white vinegar. Put some in a spray bottle and soak the door good. Keep it wet this way for 15 - 30 minutes. The buildup should rinse off easily.

I've tried using diluted vinegar to no avail. I've read that straight vinegar will etch the glass--anybody know if this is true??

We just finished remodeling one of our bathrooms. We did a lot of nice stonework for the floor and shower (standing) walls. We choose to put in shower curtains (had glass). We LOVE it. We keep them open and it makes the bathroom seem much larger, plus, you can see the stone. We special ordered curtains as they are longer than average.

Which one do you use? I have tried a few and haven't been that happy with the results. Maybe I am using the wrong brand.

Thanks!

I have shower curtains in both of bathrooms I have a circular rod (like hotels have) on them both and it gives so much extra space!
