The shuttle launch on July 4, 2006. This is the view from the boat dock at the Contemporary! :cool1:

This is from around 10th or 11th floor stairwell balcony, as I recall. I did this twice; the first time, around 6:30AM, handheld. The subject was too good not to get the sharpest shots I could, so I did it again the next morning, with tripod. Sun was just a few degrees above the horizon and the resulting illumination of the spires of Mickey's Castle was breathtaking...much more so than my lame effort here shows:

That's it - I AM taking my tripod next time. Definitely allows you to take pictures at a different "level". We'll see if my resolve holds up if / when it actually comes time to tote it around...

Besides just being a beautiful shot - it has "uniqueness" value - I've not seen another like it.

I've got a little Slik brand lightweight 'pod that I bought some years ago for CW battlefield hiking, and brought it along to Mickey's World last month. I never took it into the parks, but could have. Mrs. YEKCIM was in Full Commando Mode from time to time and it was hard enough to steal a quick handheld shot, much less try to set up a tripod shot! She's a late riser, so I was able to sneak out of the room and get these shots before she even woke up. VERY worthwhile use of the time, too. And, from the "Let's give credit where credit is due" department, it was on this forum that I learned about the outside stairwell vantage point. My thanks to whomever it was that posted that cool little tip!

{sigh} That's beautiful.

Doesn't get much better for pictures from all hours of the day and night that this balcony room. For a room like that, I would buy a tripod!! What a minute - I DID buy a tripod - and I didn't even have a room like that. (I now have 3 tripods.... Each trip I swear I don't want to cart it around - then I get to Wal-mart, after seeing near-perfect fireworks photos - and then, tripods are only $30... yada, yada)
