Shouldn't they be starting soon?

The school supply vent threads, that is. I always enjoy reading them.

I haven't received my lists yet.

:lmao: After spending a fortune on dd's college textbooks for fall, I'm longing for the days of binders and notepaper and Kleenex.

And bedding, computers, and 'stuff". I do still like back to school shopping though. :lmao:

I'm done. :goodvibes

August is going to be busy for us, so I finished a week ago.

I'm waiting for the public schools reg. fees vent thread. I can not wrap my head around a public school being able to charge fees to register your kids.

:thumbsup2 I wish all I had to buy for school were 25 cent composition books and 5 cent folders!

I got pretty lucky last year. both semesters were about $300.00 each for text books. I'm taking more classes this semester though, so I'll probably be paying out the nose for them.

I had quite a few school items get returned to me at the end of the year completely unused. I guess I could complain about wasted money, but I'm sending those same items back to school this year, so it's no big deal to me.

I think it's totally fine that I have to send in school supplies. I certainly wouldn't want teachers to spend their own money on someone else's kid.

My oldest ds just started middle school. His school supply list was pretty small. But I was shocked by the activity fees involved in middle and high school. I had no idea how expensive it was. They raised the activity fees this year in order to avoid budget cuts to athletics and band.

I truly don't understand why parents are expected to supply this stuff. We expect kids to come to lessons with a pen, a pencil and a ruler. We do the rest. This is from 6th grade: below that, the school even supplies the pens, pencils and rulers!

We supply exercise books for each subject, too. This is nationally, not just at my school.

We've been done with school shopping for a couple weeks (we go back Sept 1st). :)

I've never complained about school supply lists ~ it's all part of being a parent. And complaining about it doesn't make it go away.

So I happily pay what it costs and don't expect anyone else to pick up the slack for my kids, when they are mine and DH's responsibility. :goodvibes

I've already got all my supplies. We didn't have any lists to go by this year. I just sorta got a bunch of everything. No complaints from me :)

The short answer is there is no money allocated to buy supplies. Our schools are run differently by state and district. In other words there is nothing uniform.

My complaint is when something is required, but then never used. In 2nd grade I had to pay $10 for a special planner. The teacher never used it, b/c she kept waiting for all the kids to buy one. Well, either their parents wouldn't buy it or couldn't afford it. So I wasted $10.

Fortunately in 3rd and 4th grade, they DID use the planners.

I don't mind spending the money if the item will be utilized, in most cases.

I agree with you. I think it is truly sad that schools make teachers buy basic things like soap and tissues for the classroom, as if these are hot commodities and not necessities.

It wasn't a part of being a parent when my parents had me in school, it wasn't even a part of being a parent since my sister's kids were kids.... Why should it be a part of PARENTING? It's ridiculous.

I showed up at school with pens, pencils, notebooks and a bookbag. My friend's 7 yo had a listing for SKITTLES... yes, SKITTLES!! The candies. :scared1:

Sorry, this was not in the parent's handbook that was handed out when I was a kid.. :lmao:
