What started out as a 4 day vaca turned into a 6 day vacation....no mention of money...I just assumed I would be paid. I haven't been paid and I don't think I am going to get paid. I am kicking myself right now...cause this is not easy.

I think you should find a new job. For your boss to even ask that of you is unethical. Is this the owner of the company, the high-mucky-muck? If not, I'd file a grievance over this. Due to the fact that your boss impacts your reviews, and thus, your pay, this is way out of line.

I would document all of this...wow, and I think my world is crazy sometimes!

We are a small company and I have worked there for many years. He would be the only one I would file a grievance with. I have also known his wife for many years...but I still am feeling pretty upset. Especially considering our money is soooo tight!!!

Yes you should be paid. I have a friend that is going to watch my kids a few hours a day and I'm paying her 35 a day. You should get more if it's overnight childcare.

Okay, you need to call local nanny companies. Ask what they would charge for 6 days of 24 hour care. Then, write up a bill. If you need help, your library should have legal forms you can use for reference. When your boss returns, hand him/her an envelope with the bill and tell him/her that you'd appreciate it being taken care of immediately.

If I were you, I wouldn't be nice unless the job was the difference between living in my house and living in my car. I'd call DFS and tell them to come get the kid...it's been abandoned.

Is your boss also a friend and did you offer to watch the toddler? I only ask because if I was to offer to watch my friends child I would not expect her to pay me. If your relationship with this person is strictly professional and they asked then I would definitely expect compensation. Are you still watching him/her? You could always ask to discuss what you are going to be paid the next time your boss calls.

I know....I am pathetic. The saddest thing is that this is the childs first ever experience with being away from home and the child is so sad....nothing I say makes it better.

The pay I got depended on how drunk he was when he got home from an evening out. One night, I watched his son for about 10 hours and got $20. Another day, I watched him for 2 hours while the dad went off to a Sunday champagne brunch. Dad came back loaded, and I pocketed $100 before he realized how much he gave me.

But this little boy was 8 -when you say toddler, do you mean like, sippy cups, diapers, the works?

Yes, then they should definitley pay you. I like what the pp suggested, find out exactly what a nanny would charge and make up a nice professional looking bill for your services

DEFINITELY you should be paid! I wouldn't have done on the spot or not. I would have come up with some reason not to or something. That is just ridiculous that they asked you to babysit while they went on vacation. I only leave my children with my mom or sister when I go on vacation and I've paid my sister (while she was in college with no job) and always buy my mom something nice for doing me the favor. I'd be steaming right about now!
