I think so much depends on your personal style.
Biker dude: grow it long and wear it in a braid. Even if you are bald on top, it will mostly be covered by your bandana (no helmet of course for you).
Lounge singer: longish on the sides and back with one section left long enough to cover the dome - with careful combing and plenty of hair spray... or epoxy. After all, under the hot lights of the stage, you really don't want that much glare do you? It will only detract from the rhinestones on your jumpsuit.
Real man: cut it close or shave it. Why worry about going bald when there are so many positive things to consider:
1) Money savings - think of all the shampoo, conditioner, styling products, etc. that you won't have to buy so often. Also, if you are so inclined you can do your own cutting/shaving and save even more.
2) Save time - in addition to not needing as much hair care products, you won't need as much time to get wash, dry and style it.
3) Better for the environment - since you'll be using less hair care products, less will get into the water system. You'll also be able to reduce the amount of water and other resources you use for caring for your hair. Less plastics will be consumed since you'll no longer need combs or brushes plus you'll be disposing of fewer empty hair product bottles and tubes each year.
