I've booked myself, DH, 12 yr old DD and 8 yr old DD for 1:30 Dolphin Encounter. I haven't called the 800 # to pay for it yet and I'm wondering if I should book only DH and DDs while I pay to sit nearby and video and photograph. I know they sell those things but I don't know how much they cost. I'm also aware that some people say the interaction you get with the dolphins isn't worth the price. What do you think?? :)

We did the Dolphin Encounter at the Blue Lagoon through Royal Caribbean last August (I think it is the same no matter which cruise line you are on)...I can't remember what we paid but it was something like $65-80 per person. I really didn't care to do it or not, but my husband really wanted to. You are with a group of about 20 other people and they line you up in groups of 8-10 in about 2-3 feet of water and the dopphin swims by you several times...one time for a hug, one tiime for you to feed him a fish, one time for him to kiss your cheek, and then the dolphin swims by all 8-10 people a few times for a quick back rub. They do have people there taking pictures of you each time the dolphin is near you and they sell those pictures at the end for something like $15-20 a picture. We handed our water-proof camera to some people that were not in our group of 8-10 and they took a bunch of pictures for us while it was our groups' turn to be in the water and they came out just as good as the professional picture we paid for. If you really want the experience, then you should do it...I would have had just as much fun watching and taking the pictures myself.

It's the perfect idea to have one of the other people to take the pictures! Hope I get a "good photographer!"!

If you are doing this in Freeport there is no official photographer. But you are more then welcome to take photographs or video. The ship actually sent along a photographer on our sailing which was nice because there was no hard sell to buy...

I had the same dilema. We just returned from the cruise, and we did the Nassau Dolphin/Blue Lagoon beach day last Monday. I had purchased an expensive digital camcorder with still photo capability befor the trip, and felt the justification would be this day. I signed my two kids (DD 8, DS 6) for the 'encounter' vs. the 'swim' which was about $88 per kid (booked through Disney). I planned to be the designated photographer, and capture the Kodak moments. Weeks ago I began calling about adding myself to the package thinking there might be a way to do both (film and encounter) since the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to be a part of the action. The group is set by numbers, and I was told it was sold out, but I could try to add myself when I got there. Sure enough the green worked, at the same $88.

Before I paid, I was told that I could film from a platform about six feet over the 'area'. The area is a square floating dock with a 20' square opening. Everyone sits around with their legs in the water waiting for their groups (about 10 people at a time) turn to stand on a submerged platform and 'encounter'. Trouble is they have their backs to you (you being the cameraperson - six feet above them on a seperate dock). When I paid, they allowed me to film down around the square dock, and I got some great footage (at my own risk as the dolphins do some splashing). Some of the 'official' photographers are not so pleased that you are doing this, and a couple of times I was told to sit down with the others. Then I joined the last group for my encounter and had some people use my kids' waterproof (disposable) cameras to document my encounter. I might recommend trying this, but be prepared for some cold shouldering by the staff (unless you intend to buy their video and stills and not bother doing it yourself). Have fun.

Once again I have the perfect answer to my problem! Thank you for taking the time to write your response and help others!! It is priceless!!!!:bounce:
