Should we try the Fort....

Hello

We are not new to camping but new to having a baby and camping. We are going to start this summer and see how he likes it and he better like it but I wanted to get your thoughts.

He will be 20 months when we go. We are planning a November trip for about 8 days. Do you think that that is too long for a baby in a camper and having to deal with the comfort stations or would be staying at Pop be a better option.

My partner is also worried about the drive with the baby and the camper, she feels that she can handle one or the other. My thought is that if we can drive with a baby 18 hours, almost straight, then how much harder is it going to be to pull the camper.

So I guess Im asking is novermber going to be rough, is camping with a baby that long rough and any thoughts or suggestions would be appriciated. As I said it will depend on how he handles the summer but by disney he will be a few months older so what do you all think. We are also big on disney busses so either way we would not use our car once there.

We started our 4 year old DS when he was 10 months old and in a Tent (in Ohio), he loved it, still does, he just loves the outside though!! We went last year w/ our son (almost 2) for MD W/E, just before he turned 1, he loved it too. We just spent 8 days, 7 nights at Pop Century w/ DH DS 6, DS (almost 2), DSS 7, DSD 10, DH Ex , MIL & FIL . Everyone had a good time. So, it really depends on the baby's temperment, but if he's anything like my two he will LOVE it ! Have fun!!

I think the next time the DSD & DSS come down, we'll go camping, as long as it's not summer , with only a tent, that would be way to hot!! They get a mid-winter break at school, so maybe we'll take them then!!

IMO, camping in your own camper with a baby may be easier than a hotel. The only thing you would be giving up is the mousekeeping. Although, on the same note, if he needs a nap, you know you can go back and not have to worry about someone else being there. The toughest part may be the drive. 18 hours is a long way with a little one. Make sure you find plenty of places to stop and let him toddle around! Also, if you can handle getting up early to drive when he is more likely to sleep, that may work in your favor!

Start him young! We camped with all our kids as babies and they have grown to love it!

Thanks. We are going to start the drive on friday night after work around 6pm that way he will sleep most of the night. Or at least we hope he will. We on the other hand are a bit tired the next day but ok if we can take a nap. The 1st time we drove that way the 2nd time we left early morning and drove most of the day but got there for dinner. I like that way better but with the baby we thought night driving would be better. Thankfully we will have Grands down there for a week at that point who can watch the little man if he is ready to go.

How is the weather, what loops for a pop up, how close are the CS and busses. I guess i need to read up on the fort now in hopes this all works out. Thanks again.

November weather is great for camping! Pop-up loops are 1500 and 2000. I would suggest requesting 1500 because it is closer to everything. The loop is small and the CS is easy to walk to and it has it's own bus stop.

Have you made reservations yet? If your travel plans are around Thanksgiving the fort is probably already booked up. I suggest you try making reservations asap. If you do want that week and are told its sold out don't give up hope. Many people cancel. Call back OFTEN to try to get your dates, even if you have to work at getting your stay a day at a time. Many people reserve well over a year in advance for FW.

We started camping whenever my kids were very small, our first camper was a Cox pop-up it was a tent like camper that slept 4, it was old back then and ragged out but it was the only way we could get out and do anything, we were always so broke...lol...
My kids loved it and grew up loving camping, they would get so excited whenever we were going camping it was just such fun to them. My kids are grown now but they still talk about the good times we had in that pop-up...I have an old picture of my dd sleeping with her feet hanging out of the canvas, hehe, that's priceless to me.
I've never met a child yet that didn't love camping, it's really the best kind of family time and to this day whenever we are going anywhere camping, my marry dd is always for going.
We also always try to travel at night, it seems like time just flies. It takes us 10 hours to go to WDW and if we leave at 12:00 am we get there just in time for checkin.

The Carribbean Beach, & the All-Star resorts had to have bedding & mattresses replaced as recently as January 2008 due to an infestation of bed bugs. Disney tried to "buy" a family's silence by offering them $5000 & a all inclusive free stay. They didn't buy into it.

You may find using your car easier then the bus. Taking the stroller on the bus gets old.

i agree with the last post ... you want to use your car when you get there afterall travelling w/ your baby and stroller and gear needed while in the parks ... but it's possible to handle the buses just harder and more tiresome !!

When we first started going to WDW, oh I would say probably the first 5 times riding the bus was part of the fun for us, and this coming from a person that has a dd in a wheelchair we loved it and never really payed any attention to how long it took to get anywhere we were just having fun.
It wasn't until we had been over and over again that we started being impatience with the transportation, and noticing just how slow they were, our last trip was the first time my dh ever "timed" how long it took us to get to Epcot, over an hour. So now we also drive everywhere
Just depends on how layed back and patience you are, we have seemed to lose alot of that over the years, we race everywhere, why, I don't know.

Now THIS is why I camp......its not about Disney(although that sure makes it even better), its not about golf carts(GOt mine home tonight...I love it), it not about drinking(sure do my share of that).....but the true heart of camping...its a family thing. creating something to remember. And meeting people like you, Terri......people who really get it. Its so easy when at the fort to get lost in all the great restaraunts, and satelight dishes and transportation issues............but if ya force yourself to slowdown.......and remember to camp, remember to play with the kids instead of telling them to go play. Maybe its just me, but I dont think so...............I wish I could pack up my wife and kids and go live in the "little house on the prairie" permanently. I dont think Id miss TV, or Burger King, or cool rims on cars......I could do just fine without any it. Man...Im knee deep in my mid-life crisis!!!!!

But, could you live without your computer? I know we couldn't live without your computer, this place would be a morgue.

And as far as the mid life thing, tell your wife how lucky she is, most men buy $75000 sprorts cars, you bought a golf cart.
