It's not a waste of time because if you have 3 rides that you know you will get on and you know what time to be there you can do a lot of other things you wouldn't be able to do if you had to do all standby lines. It is free, you can use your park ticket in the park at a FPP kiosk. Go at rope drop and do the most important ride for your family then go find a kiosk with a short line. MAke you ride plans and then readjust how you are going to tour the park.
I don't think it's a waste...at least not for the way I tour. I made FP+ reservations when I went in September and went without a smart phone. I didn't use the legacy FP even though it was still available and I had a great time with my 3 FP+ selections each day. It was relaxing just knowing I had the FP+ already and it was scheduled around my ADRs.
I think it becomes questionable for people who really don't know where they are going to be that day and somewhat less useful if you think you will be constantly messing with the FP+ and changing things around. Not that there's anything wrong with that...I know a lot of people change them around a lot and that's one of the benefits of the system...just saying that you don't need to make the reservations at 30 days out if you just plan on changing them anyway (with the obvious exception being if you want a FP+ for a hard to get attraction like A&E or the mine train or whatever).
If you don't want to bother making the FP+ in advance...you don't have to. Many people have said they have found availability for what they want the day before or even the morning of. Do whatever will give you the better experience. If making FP+ in advance is only going to make you frustrated and miserable...then don't do it. I like having my plan and feel more relaxed when I already know what I have set for the day...but I know for every one of me there are at least two who HATE having a plan...lol!
