Should we cancel?

Dh just blew out his knee on Sunday. They say it probably has something todo with a torn ligament or the miniscus. We are awaiting an MRI this week. Anyway, he is on crutches and getting around fairly well. Can't pick up the babies (dd,1 and ds 1), but he can drive and is working. Should we cancel. Or will WDW have enough measures in place for someone on crutches or confined to an ECV? We are scheduled for January 10 departure. This is all new to us. We may be looking at surgery and a lengthy recovery. We'd like to go, maybe just take it easy (we are DVC members so we go often). Are we crazy to think that maybe we can make this work? Booked at OKW.

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

It is still quite a ways away. I would suggest looking into renting an ECV from an off-site location. If he is still using crutches, you can get a crutch-holder attachment for the ECV (usually a one-time $15 or so charge) to hold them while he is driving.

Don't forget that WDW is probably the most accessible vacation destination anywhere.

You also may want to scan through the disABILITIES FAQs, especially Post #2. Just click on the link in my signature to get directly to them.

If the injury is only a torn miniscus, he will get arthroscoped and be up around pretty soon. A torn ligament is a different story with longer recovery. Speak to your doctor about your plans. You may not need to cancel your trip, with some accommodation like ECV and less time on his feet.

Thanks for responding. We'll know more after the MRI tomorrow. I was thinking yesterday that WDW is doable, but getting there by plane may be another story. We shall see.

MRI says dh has bucket tear to medial meniscus. Looks like surgery. Looking into our options regarding flight. Anyone shed any light on prognosis. We are travelling with three kids (twins 1 and dd 6).

Call your airline and arrange for someone to push your husband through the airport, or see about renting a ECV from a medical supplier at home for him to use. He can then ride the ECV right to the door of the plane and it does not cost anything more since medical equipment travels for free.

This way he can have it for the airports and the parks.

Great idea. But how do I get around the need for another adult for flight. We have twins and I need one able bodied person per baby. That seems to be our biggest problem now. THe ECV idea is amazing though.

I have torn meniscus in both my knees so naturally i rent ecv when we go....for everyday walking, it does hurt, but I can still get around...just don't walk for long periods....I have been like this for years! ECV will work just fine..if you go to city hall, they will give you an assistance pass too so that the staff helps you on/off when you need it :)
BTW I rented ECV for when I get there this time off site..saving $150 doing this :cool1:

Do you have a double stroller for the twins? I would use that through the airport and at Disney World. If not what about one in a stroller and one in a child pack? You can also gate check the stroller at the door of the plane.

Is there someone else who can go with you? An older teen or Grandparent or friend?

We use a double stroller through the airport and at WDW. The airline however does not allow us to fly with twins if my husband can't take full responsibility for one of them. I am working on having my sis come down with us, stay a few days and have my dad come down later and fly home with us. This is probably the only solution, but it will be very expensive. Believe it or not, I am less worried about us down at Disney--we'd managed and as a pp said, my husband can get around. He just wouldn't be considered fully able bodied by the airlines right now. We have an accesible parking pass that would be transferrable to disney and I've already looked into an access pass at disney. The airline is our problem. Little do they know that I can haul the two of them around with no problem. When we usually fly, I carry them, while dh stows the stroller. The airline has us on file and requires a doctor's not stating that my dh is fit to fly and fit to assume FULL responsibility for an infant.

Call me crazy but is driving a possibility? It would still require you needing another adult but it may be cheaper and easier:confused3

If you're coming from the west coast probably not but if you're within 1000 miles, it might be a thought. You could still rent the ECV

That thought occurred to me last night in bed. Not sleeping much these days. I haven't floated it with dh yet. We are scheduled for ten days at WDW. We check in on a Monday. If we left on the Saturday, we'd make it there. We then check out on a Wednesday. We could shorten the trip to get home on the same day we had planned to. I don't think we'd need the extra adult. We'd have two drivers--me and dh and he is getting around fairly well. You guys are really helping me through this. I appreciate all the minds working on it. This would probably be the cheapest way of salvaging a much anticipated trip. Hugs to all. Keep the ideas rolling...:grouphug:
