I just had a look at the post office exchange rates and they are pretty good!!! - 1.77

We aren't off until August - what does averyone think? The rates havent been that great lately and I dont think we'll be hitting the $2 mark.

Do you think we'll get any better than this?

Thanks!

we bought ours some time ago, and got 1.76 for our pound from travelex.... if you are prepared to pick up from an airport they will have the best rate...

They are currently offering $1.78... They update the rate about lunchtime, so if the rate has increased in the morning they will reflect this when they update, the same is true if the rate drops..

Why not change half now and half before you go, then you get the difference between the two.

We changed half a couple of weeks back when it was dropping and got 1.72, going to change the other this week hopefully getting 1.78.

I remember about 2 weeks ago someone posting the £ would 'drop like a stone' and about 3 months ago 'experts' were predicting 2$'s to £. With hindsight it now seems that both forcasts were well off the mark.
I believe that all known variables are taken into consideration with the prevalant rate and that predictions on future rates are just guesswork.
Therefore I think you are best to change your money at the most convenient time for yourself, but following Dave's suggestion would be a way of 'hedging your bets'.

With regards to the best rates, I normally find Travelex and M&S the best and are both commission free.

You can also predict which way the tourist rates will change on a day to day basis by observing what the spot rate has done over the last 24 hours, since the Tourist rate is normally changed only once a day you can buy before it drops after a bad day. A good site to monitor the spot rate is www.dailyfx.com .

I bought some today!!!

I know travelex do the best rates but unfortunately we dont have a pick up point near us so I had a look at my banks and they were suprisingly good - not even 0.1 below travelex so I have ordered some of the money (the minimum amount we said we were going to take - we are waiting to hear if we have been approved for a Nationwide CC).

These will be ready to collect tomorrow. So in all I am pretty happy with the deal - considering a few weeks ago it was at 1.61.

Thanks!

We got $1.783 on Saturday. Quite happy with that, although I know a month or so back it hit $1.85 (tourist rate), but we weren't ready to buy then. Certainly beats last years $1.50 and the $1.34 the year before!!!

LISAGIRLY, notice you live in Hampshire.

There's an exchange place in Winchester, in Jewry Street, that will guarantee you the rate on the day you book your money, or the rate on the day you have booked to collect it - whatever is the higher. You have to pay on the day you order the money. They usually have very good rates.
