Should the Mall have kicked her out?

I haven't read all the posts and maybe someone posted this already ...

the stores in the mall are selling these types of clothes, right? The stores want you to buy this stuff, right? But, the mall says you can't wear the clothes you purchase at the mall TO the mall?

I think it would be wise for this gal to suggest that the mall officials check out what the stores in their building sell before they kick people out of the mall for wearing them!?!? Since her clothes were bought at a mall store, perhaps they ought to monitor what the store brings into the mall to sell.
I mean, if the clothing is inappropriate to wear in the mall, maybe mall officials should take it upon themselves to screen what the stores are selling?!?!!?

What that young lady was wearing appears to be fine to me (if, indeed it was the same one she wore to the mall). I have seen worse in the malls in my area. She looks v. clean cut and cute. As far as I can tell, her butt cheeks aren't hanging out of the back of her shorts and her chest doesn't look like it's about to fall out of the tank top. She's not hootchie looking in any way, shape or form.

She said she doesn't feel comfortable going back to Patrick Henry Mall, a fact that saddens her - she once bought a certain pair of red sporty shorts at the Express there.

That's the funny part to me. The mall sells the shorts, but finds it offensive for you to wear them. They want to keep their customers happy? By escorting them off the premises for wearing merchandise purchased at the mall? :rotfl:

I frequent that mall too. I've seen far worse but then we aren't seeing the back end which I'm guessing is where the problem is.

That was exactly my thought as well!! :teeth: What if the shorts were bunched up in the back and up the crack??

But if I had personally viewed such a spectacle, I wouldn't complain to mall security - I would just snicker and nudge people and point.

Yes, people have already covered that. Swimwear, lingerie, rude t-shirts at Spencers... lots of things are sold that cannot be worn int he public areas of the mall.

There's a Victoria's Secret in that mall. They sell some wonderfully sexy nighties but just because they are sold there doesn't make them appropriate for wearing in the mall.

If the outfit she had on the news last night was the same outfit, it was short, yes, but it was not inappropriate. I have to meet DSis for lunch at that mall today. I'll report back if there's any protesting.

I don't see how where she purchased her shorts is a factor? I imagine that the mall sells swimsuits and negligees too but no one is going to go shopping in those.

I think that they're being ridiculous but on what basis could she sue? If the mall is applying the same standards to everyone, it's well within their rights to ask people to leave if they don't comply.

It is the fireworks rule. You can buy the fireworks, you just can't set them off.

You can buy skank clothes (I don't even think her clothes were skank) here, you just can't wear them. You'll give those poor elderly mall walkers heart attacks.

Ah, my local mall. :goodvibes  I stay away from that mall just because that's the "hook-up" mall (that's what we called it in high school). Girls get all dressed up and go to pick up guys and guys just stand around in groups looking at girls. There's other local malls that are much better for shopping but PHM is small compared to the others so you don't have to walk as far being cute (or to pick up girls).

That being said, I don't think there's anything wrong with what she's wearing. I visited my 13 year old cousin in school one day and they were wearing FAR worse things than this. I was always too self concious to wear short shorts though, but plenty of other girls I've seen around here wear shorts like this. Maybe mall security had nothing else better to do that day? I do like PHM because it's a clean mall. They don't let kids that are school age hang around during the week when school's in and you're not allowed to walk more than 3 people across around the mall.

I'm not talking about underwear or swimwear b/c you wouldn't go off wearing a nighty or bikini to the mall or to the grocery store or to your kids soccer game. I'm talking about the standard outerwear they sell -- pants, shorts, shirts, skirts. In this case, we're talking about the girl's shorts, not her wearing only a bra or a bikini or a VS nightie. We're talking about the outerwear that people wear to the mall. If she got kicked out of the mall for wearing her bikini or her lingerie, then I could see a point!

Also ... don't all malls have a rule about wearing shirts in the mall!? I wonder why last Christmas in our mall, they allowed the guys at Abercrombie to hang outside of the store topless wearing PJ bottoms w/boxer bands showing in the store? I bet if DH went to the mall like that, he'd be kicked out. The Abercrombie guys were far more inappropriate than this gal!

and another local checking in...

I have seen much worse at that mall in the last few months. Not sure why this lady got singled out.

I know the mall is near to completing a big redecoration/rehab/redevelopment and they are trying to compete with new "upscale" shopping centers in the area, but this is ridiculous!

I have a feeling whoever it was that complained knew someone who knew someone and THAT'S why something was actually done about it.

I completely agree. :surfweb:

My opinion:

I could care less what some one is wearing or not wearing. If I don't like what they look like for what ever reason, I don't look at them. Same thing goes for writings on t'shirts, short shorts, short skirts, disgusting looking, overweight men in speedo's and the like. I only worry about what my kids are wearing, as for everyone else, oh well............

Theres nothing wrong with it. She looks fine!

I owned lots of shorts like this, that is just plain silly! Once I was out of school and that darn fingertip test (I have long arms) nothing i owned was very long. Its an age thing and not that big of a deal. I hope no shop lifting was gong on while this was going on, hate to see real crime go unpunished!

In the picture she looks fine. And from Shug's report, I guess all was well in the back as well. Maybe she had bent over and a little bit of her orb (those who posted on the boyshort thread know about orbs ;) ) stuck out. While I wouldn't want my butt cheek to hang out I don't care if someone else's does by accident.

The last time we were at the Magic Kingdom, there was a lady there with short, shorts practiclaly painted on and she did not have this girl's figure. Our nickname for the MK lady? Cheeks. ;)

I saw it on the news, too.

With this gal I don't think it was a racism issue because there is a good mix of people plus some of the mall security staff are African American. I just don't get it, really.

I guess the Puritan mentality is still alive and well in Virginia - ironic because Jamestown is celebrating their 400th anniversary! Virginia Beach has ordinances forbidding bad language in public in the name of keeping things family friendly.

What happened to freedom of speech? :confused3

I didnt read the whole thread so I apologise if I'm repeating something, but is it possible that these security guards were on some sort of power trip? I dont know about Va but here in Ky sometimes the security officers are not the best qualified candidates...its a fairly low paying job here. Shes a cute girl...maybe they were just messing with her and felt like she ignored them, so they did that macho...i'm in charge crap ????

You don't think her shorts are short?????? I can see where her rear end might hang out the back when she walks. They are pretty short but I still wouldn't have kicked her out. Heck, walk around any mall and most girls under the age of oh, 20 or so are dressed the exact same way. She certainly doesn't pass the fingertip test (shorts have to be as long as your fingertips with your arms hanging down) so she couldn't wear them to most schools with a dress code.

I have a teenage DD with long legs and long arms. If I *could* find shorts that came to her fingertips, they would have to be Bermuda-style or longer. I have been unable to find any of these mythical "fingertip shorts" that would actually fit her. She likes capris, so that's what usually gets worn to school instead of any type of shorts.
It's hard finding skirts & shorts that are stylish, fit nicely but are modest enough for her to feel comfortable in. And no, she's not allowed to wear "booty" shorts, but a lot of her acquaintances have been wearing short-shorts, booty shorts and/or shorts with various "sayings" on the butt since they were all in grade school.

agnes!

So, it's okay to buy short-shorts in the mall, you just can't wear them TO the mall. Gotcha. :thumbsup2 Glad that's all cleared up now.
