Should the Government pay for digital converter boxes??

on the same breath, they're also trying to force everyone from dial up internet to high speed internet. I can't recall the exact year they were shooting for, but I believe it was 2010.

In both cases I think the government should not provide the boxes and modems and give some sort of incentive for those who are all ready high speed or digital subscribers.

WHY!!!??? Home access to the internet is not a right. Should they also provide a computer as well? Is anyone familiar with the public library anymore?? :confused3

Dawn you responded before I could finish editing my response. I forgot to put the word NOT in there.

To sum up my thoughts:
Incentives to get people to buy on their own. Don't pass out freebies or no one will upgrade themselves and people all ready subscribing will complain they paid for theirs.

Apparently in 2008, analog broadcasts will cease and all broadcasts will be digital. There is a bill before congress to provide, free of charge, to all tv viewers who still have an analog tv, a digital converter box. The cost of this will be in the range of $3.5 billion. I didn't realize that it was a right to watch tv and that the taxpayer has to foot the bill to update equipment for those who can't afford a tv capable of receiving a digital signal. This has to be the future recipient of The Golden Fleece Award!!!

i vote for having it paid for by cancelling that bridge to nowhere in alaska :rotfl2:

if you get direct or dish tv aren't you already set :confused3

i have a TV from 1985 ... it's still functions perfectly but i have been looking for a reason to replace it. i guess i can thank tom delay for making me get a new one :rotfl2:

Wasn't it supposed to be converted all ready??? It keeps getting pushed back.

Well whenever it happens, I am ready and I am NOT paying for those who are not.
You mean, you don't WANT to. You will. The government doesn't ask you how to spend your tax money.

I don't recall any government intervention when we switched from Cassettes to CD's or VHS to DVD. They just gradually phased in the new technology and little by little phased out the old technology. When we are "told" we "must" switch to something and people are curious as to why, I have one comment; "Follow The Money Trail" and I suspect you will get your answer.

This is something that was announced in November of 1998 subject for full roll out in 2006 but has already been rolled back at least once to 2008 and now is possibly going to be moved yet again to 2010. That is a 10-12 year notice that you will need to get something in order to watch tv. If it happens and people aren't ready I say tough ! We found a way to get a new set that is compatible but if after 10-12 years you still don't do it no way will I willingly fund it for you.
