well as someone who worked retail for the past 10 years i say no
to manu of our national holdays are about shopping and not about the actual holidays and i think people should be able to spend the day with the family if they want

No, NO, No !! dh is retail mgr......he works 12 hour days as it is.....we miss out on Chirstmas eve....because someone has to close the store. :confused3

I had a hard time answering -- the title of the thread is "should stores be open" and the poll said "would you like to see them" which is maybe arguing semantics, but I see a difference. :teeth:

Personally, I think they should be allowed to be open if they choose to do so. My mom was a nurse and I grew up having her work holidays. We just worked around it and we were used to it.

No, they deserve to be off with their families.

Unfortunately, I think pharmacies should be opened with reduced hours. I've been a patient in pain that was thankful one holidy that our local CVS was opened when I needed something called in!

I work in a hospital, so I have to work holidays every year, on a rotating basis. One year it's Memorial Day, Labor Day and Chirstmas Eve and Christmas Day. The other is 4th of July, Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Hospitals NEVER close!

NO!

 I'm so ashamed, because I went and bought some flowers today to take to our Thanksgiving dinner from the grocery store.

I think only the essential places should be open but only with those who wish to be there. Luckily where I work, we're off today and Christmas day. I couldn't imagine being forced to work either day.

I for one think that everywhere should be open. If no one wanted to work on the holidays, they wouldn't and employers would need to increase wages in order to stay open. This is a free-market after all, and it has chosen staying open.

I dont think retail stores shoiuld be open..... but then again I still think stores should be closed on Sundays also.

What if Disney were closed down on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years day? Those people that work at Disney probably want to be home with their families too!!
I say let them stay open. Lots of people aren't in to traditional holidays. We are eating out today and going to a casino/arcade/bowling alley.

Different perspective here since we owned a retail store and we were open. If at time of accepting employment you are told of the requirement to work and you take the job then you must work. If you do not want to work then don't take the job.

Business is in business to make money and if that means being open certain days then so be it.

A holiday to one person might just be another day to someone else.

Some places will fire you if you refuse to work. I was able to refuse and not get fired back in my retail days, but not everyone is so lucky.

Personally, I particularly think drug stores should be closed on "big" holidays. Unfortunately, we have Walgreens and CVS on nearly every corner, it seems. This is because I am a doctor on call, and people very rarely call with actual emergencies. Usually, it seems it is a person wanting a refill on a controlled substance who thinks I'll be too distracted by the holiday to check our files or with the drug stores. Really, I think that some of these people have a list of doctors they try. The funniest fellow was the one who called me one evening at one phone number, was turned down, and then tried again later, at a different number, as if I wouldn't remember he called. I have a book next to each phone at my house, and I write a message for each call. We have certain rules for refilling controlled substance, which basically not on evening after the office is closed or weekends or holidays, no exceptions, unless we know the patient is a cancer patient.

I think they have gone too far. If they are going to be open, it should only be for a couple hours in the morning. Everyone deserves to have Thanksgiving off. Debby

No-just dont think it is fair for people to have to work while I celebrate the holiday.
