no that's just nasty. As for Adam and Eve, that was in the beginning of time and their blood line was a lot stronger then. I would hate to see how a brother and sister's kids would come out. Imagine your kids having 2 parents, but only one set of grandparents.

Adam and Eve weren't brother and sister. Eve was "made" from Adam. so, if you really want to get into it her, he could technically be her "father". we're talking about their children. Cain and Able. who, were both boys....so i'm still wondering how we're supposed to believe that whole story. and then someone else also mentioned Noah and his family. they were the only ones left on earth after the flood.....

Not to start a religious debate but reading in the footnotes of my NIV bible:

"The wife Cain chose may have been one of his sisters or a niece. The human race was still genetically pure, and there was no fear of side effects from marrying relatives."

Then later on Lot's daughter's slept with him and became pregnant.(Genesis 19:30-38). The footnote explains:

" Why doesn't the bible openly condemn these sister's for what they did? In many cases, the Bible does not judge people for their actions. It simply reports the events. However, incest is clearly condemned in other parts of scripture"(Lev 18:6-18;20:11,12,17,19-20 and others).

I am by no means telling people what they should or should not do, that is between them and God. I was just stating biblical reference to the questions about Adam and Eve and incest.

oh how convenient that they mention that. "it's ok for Adam and Eve's kids, but not for you or your kids!"....:sad2: so glad that i don't go by that book.

and i'm not saying that directly towards you or anything, just making a comment.

There are several theories, but no definitive answer on Adam and Eve:

With rare exceptions, the Bible tends to mention ONLY male offspring, so it's very possible that Adam and Eve also had female children who simply aren't named in the Bible. They went on to have Seth later after their first two sons, and it's implied that he wasn't the baby of the family -- we know that Adam and Eve lived extremely long lives (I can't remember exactly how many years), so it's entirely possible that they had 20-30 children, but they just aren't mentioned specifically.

We know that Cain founded a city somewhere away from his parents. Where'd those people come from? One theory is that God created other people in addition to Adam and Eve; people who were created after the "prototype" but who aren't mentioned specifically in the Bible.

And some people believe in a race of people who were half-angel, half-human. What's their name? Nephim or nepherim -- that's not exactly right, but I forget the correct term. They're supposed to be giants who were attracted to human women. I'm not really knowledgeable about that subject, but it doesn't seem to fit Biblically because angels are created beings -- they do not reproduce like humans.

I suspect that we don't have all the information here; however, it doesn't seem to be a life-shattering topic.

Ok, this is just one of those things that makes me go

As far as the Adam and Eve thing, in theology class we were taught that it was the way our ancestors explained how we got here and how the earth was populated, and how we got our inherent tendency to look for the easy way out. (just eat the apple and you'll know everything! You don't have to work or learn anything!) Catholics don't believe that it's literal, so the ick factor of sibling marriage isn't complicated by it.

Okay ... I've gotta say it ... am I the only one who is a little weirded out about a few posters (including the OP?) who are using the adam and eve story as ... well ... seemingly a factual event that can provide us evidence for or against incest....? Like either -- adam and eve did it, so it must be acceptable --- or adam and eve did it, but their genetic line was more "pure" :confused3 so it was okay for them but not for us.

Not trying to open up a big bucket of popcorn:: (I know for some posters the question of whether the adam and eve story really happened would be pretty controversial :confused3 -- to be honest the very concept that there is a "controversy" there is mind-boggling ... REALLY happened? give me a break) but really ... even aside from that "controversy", why would a bible story be appropriate to use as evidence for/against such an issue??

I had to say it ... and I did! popcorn::

i wasn't using it in the literal sense. i was just stating "well if you believe the Adam and Eve story, then blah blah blah".

yeah, no, I wasn't indicating you were one of the ones doing it. :) Maybe you have a point though and a lot of people have just been treating the adam/eve issue as a hypothetical that they were just exploring or discussing. I just find it weird that it plays so heavily in this debate!!!

Well seeing as this thread is up to 11 pages, I think I will go ahead and post again ALSO!!
