Should she miss the AIMS test for important doctor appointment?

My daughter has an important doctor appointment with a specialist. It's actually her first appointment with him....she was just diagnosed with something, and when her pediatrician wanted her to see a specialist, I called to make the appointment and the wait was 3 months long. Depending on her X-ray results, that would be the only way to get her in sooner. Evidentially, they thought she needed to be seen sooner (after seeing the results) because they then got her an appointment in two weeks. Now I find out that my daughter is suppose to take the AIMS tests that week! So... I don't know if I should cancel the appointment and risk waiting 3 more months for an appointment, or have her miss the test, or see if she can do the test another time. The appointment is not a matter of life and death, however, if my daughter ends up needing surgery, I would like her to get it in the summer, if possible, so she doesn't miss school while recovering. Therefore, I would prefer that she keep this appointment coming up.

Any advise appreciated! Thanksprincess:

I personally think she should go to the doctor's appointment.::yes::

I think her health is more important than the test. Take her to the doctors appt!

I personally think she needs to go to the appointment.

Maybe you could find out about a make up test.

I agree. Keep the doctors appointment and arrange to take the test at a different time.

I was recently faced with a similar situation and decided that my dd's health was much more important. You might call the specialists office back and advise them of the situation so that if another appt comes up, maybe you could take it instead. Hope everything turns out okay for your daughter with the specialist.

I would call the doctor's office and the teacher. The doctor may be able to schedule her in a different time that's not too far in the future. The teacher will be able to tell you if there's a date for a make-up test. If there isn't a good, workable situation, I'd keep the doctor's appointment.

Tell the school she has a doctor's appointment and take her to that. She won't be the only child absent on test day. They will likely administer the test in the library or someplace like that to the children who missed it on the origional day.

if your AIMS tests are anything like they are
here in Tucson... they aren't worth the paper
they are printed on...

Unless they threaten that she wouldn't
graduate in May if they aren't taken...
take her to the Dr!

Health is MUCH more important!
(education is important, but if you aren't
well, what does having an education mean?)

They always have to give make ups for students that miss any tests. Someone is always going to be absent for illness, death in the family, doctor appts. etc.

Go to the doctor's appointment.

That's what makeup tests are for - kids that must miss. You have a good excuse.

Another vote for keeping the Dr. appointment.

The only time I would even consider skipping a specialist appt. that is tough to get for AIMS would be if the score was needed for graduation - but that is a couple of years out - and even then they have several chances to pass the same test.

Our schools here offer makeup days because kids get sick and are out! That being said, if it were my child, health before school! Good Luck.

Take her to the doctors appointment and don't wait until summer if the doctors recommend that she have the surgery right away. There are makeup tests and tutors that can keep her up to date with her studies. In NY the schools have to provide in home/hospital instruction for children recovering from an extended illness. Her health is far more important than a few months of her education.

Thank you all for the replies. Guess I will keep that appointment!
If just figured when my daughter told me she had that darn test at the same time. Just my luck!

tw1nsmom: I would never, ever wait for surgery that needed to be done right away. I don't even know if she will need it. I was just 'thinking out loud' of the worst case scenerio.
