Should nurse friend give dd flu shot?

DD is 9 and school has just started back up. I am very sorry to say an elementary school child in our county died over the holidays from flu complications. There are no more flu shots available in our area, however my dear friend, a registered nurse, still has plenty at her work although the general public cannot go there to receive them. But she told me if my pediatrician would write her a scrip to give dd the shot, she will give her one at home. Do you all feel the shots are safe for 9 year olds, and is this something I should follow thru on. I don't know if my dr. will go for it, but it might be worth a try I guess. Thanks for any imput.

My kids have received the flu shot since they were 2 and 6 yrs old. About 6 years worth of flu shots and no problems at all. But you must know that it takes several weeks for the shot to become effective and the outbreak may be over with by then. Why would your Dr. not recommend the flu shot? Is your DD allergic to eggs? Call your Dr. or talk to your friend and good luck.

If your pediatrician will write a perscription for the flu injection and he/she believes it is in the best interest of your DD then I would do it. BUT only under the direction and perscription of my DD's doctor..........

I honestly don't think I'd give my child the shots now. After you get the shot it takes 2 full weeks for it to kick in entirely. Your DD could easily be exposed to and develop the flu in those 2 weeks following the shot, since January is typically more flu ridden than Dec. The optimal time to recieve the sots is October really, long b4 a normal flu season starts. Though it came a bit earlier this year, oct was still plenty of time to get them and have them kick in. But, talk to your doc and see what he says.
