Should Leash Laws Apply to Cats?

Page 3 and still no mention of catios? These are fairly common in the PNW - not entirely sure why.

They put one of these in our local animal shelter, attached to a communal indoor area for the more social cats that were up for adoption. Cats were mostly using the indoor area. Just a small sampling.
I brought it up two posts ahead of you.

I didn't build one because of concern of some of the outdoor cats around us getting to my cats.

We have one! That is what I meant that my husband built and our cats love it. It is really big too, he did a great job.

Cats that were raised as outdoor cats can be difficult. Some never give up that desire to be outside and we know how some are good escape artists. Not all of them hunt or destroy things either. I know it’s hard to deal with the ones that do though.

We have 3 cats. Our 2 younger ones have zero desire to go outside. The 12 year old cat will try almost every opportunity. He is stealth and knows how and when to position himself to do so. Succeeds about once every 1-2 weeks. He only stays out about an hour and is back at the door wanting inside.

Since covid, we've lost our 2 elder cats and picked up 4 :sad2:. As a kid, our cats were indoor/outdoor, but that changed when I grew up and had my own place to live. Our 4th guy, MeowMix, showed up on our patio emaciated, raggedy, and covered in scabs. While one of our boys has gotten out a couple of times only to realize his grave error, I am sure the outdoor life is MeowMix's strong preference. Well, too bad, buddy! When he started scratching at the window screens in an effort to sneak out, some of the windows are now pretty much never opened any more, and our bedroom window has a baby gate. It's pretty funny to walk up to our place to see him sitting at the window looking like a jail bird  There have been a couple of people I know who had lost cats. I would have tried to offer him to them since we kind of considered him a long-term foster, but they were people who did not keep their pets indoors exclusively. So yeah, we have 4 cats now. paw:

Good for you for being a responsible pet owner. Keep up the good job.

Up in Massachusetts the uptick in wild turkey seems to be feeding tons of coyote which are now rampant and gobbling up pets. After seeing all I read on Nextdoor I would not willfully let any animal I love loose on purpose :( it is very sad so the cats would be indoors or leashed, same goes for a dog or a rabbit and anything else that could be food for a coyote.

I used to have an outdoor cat when I was a kid and never thought anything of it but not any more.

Plus isn't there FIV? sigh

Leash necessary here and at our previous location. Previous location-coyotes and American eagles regularly grabbing cats and small dogs. Here-bobcat occasionally but main concern is gators. There are some feral cats seen on ring cameras, residents try to trap them to try and domesticate them but it rarely works. If there is a body of water, there will be an alligator.

I love his name - MeowMix! Are the other's named after cat foods too?

DD lived many years in NZ where cats were a deadly threat to the many birds there. She adopted a free roaming cat but put a bell on it to help birds have a chance to escape. Cats should be indoors or on a leash imho.

No. The cat to the left is the smart, chill Babu Frik, we also have my neurotic Monkey, and my beautiful Dug who really only loves you when he's hungry. MeowMix was pretty loud at first, and really loves his food. He's small, is now a little chonky and his attitude really reminds me of Joe Pesci...he'll take on anybody! He's a bit of a bully at times, but he's mostly low-key. They're a gang of bad boys, but what can you do? We love them lots.

Babu Frik - I love it!
