I always open my presents before xmas and then re wrap them I am a master at gettign the tape off without tearing the paper and no one knows anything. Open it up but use a very sharp blade to cut the tape then re tape it over the spots originally taped.

I have read about the things your MIL has given you in the past. I would open it now and then put a new gift in the box (something you really want). Then when Christmas comes, you can rave and rave about the perfect gift she picked for you.
