I had three positive pregnancy tests last week! I don't have children, so I'm not very experienced with pregnancy. I figured a good start would be an appointment with my OB/GYN.

A little background.....a few months ago, I went in on a Monday for my annual Pap, and the receptionist told me that my appointment was the next day. But I am positive that when I made the appointment, they said Monday.

So then they call me later that day and say that the doctor has to reschedule, no reason given.

When I finally get in, I see the nurse, no doctor (whick was OK, it was just a Pap).

So I have my appointment today at 12:15, I leave my house at 11:45. I get there and the receptionist is shocked to see me. She tells me that the doctor was called to the hospital to deliver a baby and that I have to reschedule. She called me at 11:45, but I didn't hear my phone ring as I was driving.

Question: Should I find a new OB/GYN???? I understand that babies need to be delivered, but it seems to be a lot of problems with this doctor.

First of all, Congratulations!!!!! How exciting!

Second, does your doctor have partners? Yes, I understand that the doctor has to leave when a baby needs to be born. That's why most (I assume) have partners. One partner is on duty each day to deliver any babies that would come on that day. So while you're not guaranteed that your doctor will deliver your baby, your pretty well guaranteed (of course there are always exceptions) that your appointments will be kept. I guess that's the trade off.

Bottom line, if you're not comfortable with the doctor or the staff, you should find another practice.

ETA: I changed OBs at 16 weeks. I was not comfortable from the beginning. I kept giving the first one another chance and I finally had enough. It was no issue at all to change midway through the game.

Congratulations!!!!!!

My OB's practice tells patients when making an appt if the OB will be on call that day. They say, "The dr is on call that day. Are you ok with that or do you want to schedule for another day? If you're ok with it, just call us 15-30 mins before you arrive to make sure that he/she hasn't been called over to the hospital. If he/she gets called over while you're in route, we'll call you back to let you know if another dr is available to see you."

Like the pp said, if you're not comfortable with what's happened already, you may want to look for a new OB. I probably would.

No, my doctor doesn't have any partners......I think I will start looking. Thanks for the input!

I see you're in San Pedro. I know a great ob/gyn practice in Long Beach (affiliated with Long Beach Memorial) with several doctors, a CNP and a lactation consultant on staff. If you'd like the info feel free to PM me and I can give you the details. :)
