I hope this is the right thread to talk about this. I think it is :goodvibes

I have the opportunity to run the half marathon in January with 2 of my friends who ran it last year. They invited me to go with them last year, but DD was just shy of turning a year and I knew that I would not want to leave her. Well, now it has been a year and I still have not gotten back into the shape I want to be. I know that running and training for the marathon would definitely motivate me (right now I walk on the treadmill daily). My only concern (well, besides the money) is leaving DD for the 4 days to go down there. Is that bad? DH is very supportive and says that he is behind me 100% and he knows how badly I want to do this. Not only do I want to get in shape, I'm a Disney nut (we even got married down there :lovestruc) So bottom line, should I be feeling guilty. Is it selfish to leave DD who will be almost 2 to go to run the marathon? Has anyone left kids at home to go run the marathon? Just curious :goodvibes

I say YES, go for it. I don't have any children but I participated in the Princess Half this year and two friends joined me at WDW and they left their children behind for 3 days as we enjoyed the marathon weekend. One of my friends participated in the run and the other was part of our cheer team. This event was our first and it motivated my friends so much that they signed up for the DL and W&D half marathons and this time they are bringing their children and husbands to participate in the family 5K. I loved how this one event motivated them to run with me and include their families.

thank you for your post :goodvibes

I say go for it. I leave my boys every Jan to do the WDW races. It's good to have a little time for you sometimes.

DO IT!!!!
Best. Weekend. Ever!!!! Check out my TR (link below) if you have any reservations. You are going to have a blast and if you feel bad for leaving your baby just bring back some extra money with to buy some special things for her. :rolleyes1

I am confident you can do this and will return to your family a much better person for having given this a try. Your DH will be there for the young one and will have some fantastic bonding time.

I am going to transfer this thread to the Events / Competition side of W.I.S.H. where I hope you will get others who have done the event and left family behind to give you the advice and encouragement you seek.

I leave my kids at home with DW a couple times a year (at least) to go run a race. Go - it's Disney, and a race. Enjoy yourself, and, if you feel guilty, bring a treat back for DD when you return.

I loved watching your videos on youtube of the princess marathon!!!

I will definitely bring things back for DD. She's getting to be a Disney nut just like her mom

I've decided to do the run but am still nervous about leaving. I hope that will change as time goes on. I think the first step was signing up. Now that I've done that, now the training begins. yikes! what have I gotten myself into!

Thank you to everyone for your replies!!!

Do it,do it,do it.I have been married 22 years and DH and I have only been away for 2 overnights with the exception of our honeymoon. Now I resent that and wish we did not live like that. At the time I did not want to leave the kids but looking back now that would have been the best time because now that they are teens that is a whole other issue.

Whatever you decide good luck, marathon weekend is a blast

I say do it! DH and I are leaving our son (will be 13 months by then) with my parents for 4 days do run the DL half in September. We brought him with us to WDW marathon weekend in January and I think he'll have more fun with Grandma and Grandpa at home!

Training for a half is great motivation to get back in to shape!

Its not selfish IMO. Momma needs her time too! I left DD age 4 home with dad this year to do the princess and had a blast. First girls trip I have had in a long time, wish I would done it sooner.

I say go for it! Helps dads appreciate all we moms do.

Go for it! It gives your DH quality time with DD and you quality time with your friends. Plus it gives you a purpose to your walking/running. You'll come back refreshed and ready to see DD and maybe DH also :)

Do it! My youngest (DD7) had a real problem with me not being home for a few days but in the end it was a great experience for her. It was a better experience for me to do something that I previously thought impossible.

It certainly eased my guilt to go shopping for presents. Everyone enjoyed Mom coming home with Disney presents.:thumbsup2

It's not selfish at all to do something for yourself. Kids need to learn the world doesn't revolve around them, so this is a good way to start. Go run the half, have a wonderful time, and let your husband have some quality time with your daughter.
