Should I bring my step-daughter's birth certificate to DW?

My step-daughter is 7 (going to be 8 in May)... she is big for her age. She wears a size 10 and looks even older. I am afraid people will question her age because of her size. Should I bring her birth certificate just in case?

Thanks in advance. :)

I brought a copy when DD9 was 2y11m, back in 12/2000. I never needed it, despite her being off the chart tall and very verbal. I just felt better having it. You probably won't need it, but if it will ease your worry, just make a small copy and stick it in your bag. Please don't, under any circumstances, take the original.

Enjoy!!

I dont know about where you live, but the state of Texas actually prints you additional wallet sized birth certificates for about $3 a piece. Our children are large in stature as well and we always carry them with us.

My son turned 9 in March, but wears a size 14. DH is 6'5" and I'm 6', so anyone who has questions about his age can just look at us! He can tell them when he was born if they ask. I thought about bringing a copy, but decided not to--I'm sure they'll take us at our word! (If not, they can just hang around him a little while, then they'll KNOW he's only 9!!:rotfl:

We brought a copy just in case when our daughter was 2. Never needed it but it didn't hurt anything either.

Dh reduced and copied DS's to a wallet size. We were asked but never questioned about his age.

I doubt you'll have any problems, but it would take two seconds to make a copy and you'll stress less on vacation!

That is a fantastic idea! Now we just have to convince her mother to let us make a copy of it. :rolleyes2
You should be able to order a certified copy from the county where she was born. Obviously more expensive than free, but sometimes it's worth a little money not to deal with evil ex's.

Just wanted to mention that many states issue id cards thru the DMV. Here in Florida they start doing them at age 5. If you can get one of these they are usually the same size as a Driver's license, and you could just stick it in your wallet. It is a legal document, and to me seems much safer than carrying around a birth certificate or copy of one. I just always worry about identity theft.

You guys are allowed to order a certified b.cert. Contact vital records/statistics in the county of her birth (or if you want, contact vitalchek.com and pay them) and order one!

Photo copy is a very good idea, if they are nervous block out any info that isn't really needed.

The other thing, assuming her parents are not going with you, is a medical release. It can save time if the child needs medical treatment if you have the power to take action if you are unable to reach her parents in the time of an emergency.

DS looks a lot older than he really is and we never were questioned. I thought for sure, we would be questioned in the restaurants, but never have been. As OP have said, if it makes you feel better, you can bring a photo copy of the bcert, but I would never bring the original. Also, as a divorced parent, I can tell you that you are not at the mercy of the other parent for the bcert...just go down to the registrar in the town DSD was born and get a copy-you or DH can do this. There are also various companies on-line that will obtain it for you for a fee. :)

My kids are all tall for their ages and in our many trips we've never been questioned, either.

Good ideas! The following is a fairly standard form for activities and trips when a child is essentially under the care and supervision of an adult other than their legal custodian(it allows the appointed person to act as a parent/guardian for medical and any OTHER reasons that might arise (doo-doo occurs, think lost, runaway, abducted, legal issue, etc). Notarizing it would be nice, but it really isn't necessary:

The undersigned _______________________________, referred to as the parent and lawful guardian of _______________________________, a minor.

Parent acknowledges that said minor is authorized to take the following trip _______________________________, and to engage in all activities incident thereto.

Parent hereby appoints _______________________________, as loco parentis, and authorizes the rendering of such emergency medical care as could be undertaken by the parent. The parent hereby releases _______________________________ and its agents and employees from any and all acts taken in good faith during the trip.

Signed this ________ day of _______________________________, 20______.

Thanks so much for all the replies!! I appreciate it.

We don't need a medical waiver because she is my husbands daughter, my step-daughter. :)

Thanks again!

Our nine year old daughter is only 9 and is 5'5 and wears a womens size 10 shoe already and wears a size med in most jrs clothes....and when she was almost 3 she always was way off the charts too....I had her BC with us always but we were never questioned about her age.....My Dh is 6'8" though so I guess they figured it out
