We have rented a home for check-in next Thursday (6/5) for 9 nights. I called the owner to check when the final payment is due. He called me last Thursday and said he would have the management company call me and finalize everything. I still haven't heard from the mgmt co. or from him. I've called his home and cell and no response yet. Is this normal practice?? Am I stressing unnecessarily? If you think I should worry, where can I find a home on this short notice??

HELP!!!!!!

Do you have a phone number for the management company? I would call them.
I always have to have things finalized well in advance, so I see why you're worried and do not think you're being unnecessarily panicked.
I don't, however, think you should be concerned about finding another home quite yet. If you have a number for the management, call them, and continue to call the owner repeatedly until you get an answer.

I would keep calling the owner and leave messages. I'd let him or her know that I will be looking into other homes and taking back my money if he or she doesn't respond in a timely manner. Reiterate that you want to have everything finalized before you leave for your trip.

What does you contract say in terms of final plans?

It is normal for guest to pay ballance 8 weeks prior to arrival upon which owners will then send all the info, key access, alarm codes and address etc to the guest. If you booked through a rental site and not direct then send a email to the admin and see if they have alternate contact info for you....

Every time I've rented a home in Orlando my final payment was due 45-60 days prior to my arrival, and in most cases it was 60 days. I would definitely be getting worried. Keep calling.

Everytime we've rented, they require payment at least 30 days prior to checking in. If you're leaving in a few days and haven't given them the final payment yet, I would be worried too. Do you have any information as to where to pick up the key, where the place is and any other contact information? Maybe on the site you booked your place is a way to get in touch with them. We're not checking in until June 23rd and I've already paid in full and have the code for the key box and contact information for the owners. Keep calling until you get this resolved.

We are renting for the first time this June. Our check in day is June 10 and our final payment was due only a couple of days ago so I guess diferent home owners do things differently. :confused3
What agency did you go through to rent your home? VRBO or something similar? I'd check and find out as much as possible about the home owner and go from there.
Let us know what you find out...

I would be worried also, but you honestly might not need to be. I'm an uptight, type A. I want all loose ends wrapped up pronto, but you may just have a laid back owner and management company.
Keep trying, have a backup plan, but I bet everything will work out.
My first experience like this was a beach trip to Galveston. I kept asking when final payment was due, could hardly get a call back, etc. I thought for sure when we finally arrived we'd have to sleep in the car. We arrived for check in to the management office, and they acted like they couldn't have cared less when we handed over the check.
The house was great, wonderful vacation! Two months later when they still hadn't cashed the check, I thought maybe I was going to be nuts. Sure enough 3 months after vacation, they finally cashed the check.
Anyway, I hope everything works out!

I would be worried....

Not only did this happen to my sister in law it also happened to my best friend ... but the best one was my sister in law...

The guy who had her money had died and she got a hold of is exwife and the exwife said there was not any record of the rental at this place... so she called the credit card company and told them and the credit card company gave back her money and they went after the man/exwife... We paid a little extra because after that we had only a couple of weeks before we were to leave she called the front check in and told them what had happen along with a fax from the credit card company they believed her and gave her a 3 bedroom rather than a 2 bedroom only for about 400.00 dollars more and after they had checked how many times she had stayed there before they had checked out they gave them back the 400.00 dollars... and said hopefully you will see us next year...

Nice huh...

Just becareful when you do these rentals...

I really hope everything goes well and you have a great trip:hippie:

Well, twinmom, you were right! He finally called today having no idea why I'd be so concerned. He gave us all of the details via email today and said to mail the check when we can :) He's just very trusting. I took it straight to the post office once I got the email. I sure hope everyone who rents from him really is trustworthy and he doesn't get burned :(

All's well - we look forward to a great trip!!!

Excellent news! I hope you all have a great trip! Our little ol family of five will be there soon too!
The owners we are renting from in Emerald Isle are really laid back as well, I just love people like that. :goodvibes

There is always an element of trust involved - you are trusting the owners to rent you their vacation home, and they are trusting you to treat it with respect. Mostly everything works out fine.

Have a great time. I'm glad everything worked out ok for you.

Thanks for the update. We're renting from owners for the first time and I have to admit your situation made me a bit nervous.

Have a great vacation!:yay:
