Should collge athletes be paid? From EPSN

Say yes. Here's why NCCA is make millions dollars off these kids for free. There scolships don't cover the full tution and how take out loans. All along NCCA is making money off these kids video games, and sell there jerersys. The big moeny makes as football and basketball cover the athletes departmart. That forces them cover minor sports like swimming and tennis. Who come on goes see swimming and tennis no one. The poor kids can even get job doing the sports season because it voilates there stupid rules. All the college kids I know get work and school be schoship to. Say the college atlhetes can't get job down right stupid.

The NCAA used to allow schools to give student athletes a small spending money stipend. I think that should be allowed, but I do not think they should be paid. I also think schools should be held to higher graduation standards for its athletes. Some of the schools in the NCAA basketball tournament have graduation rates below 20%.

I don't agree one bit. These kids should count their blessings for going to some of these well-respected schools. As a matter of fact, they should be taking advantage of the higher education because it will help them AFTER professional sports, if they make it that far. Remember, not everyone will make it as a pro. That's just a grim reality. Also, I like the fact that they have to do well in their studies in order to stay on the team. Maybe a stipend would help to defray the costs of living expensises but money should not be paid at all.

I totally agree. Sports in college should not be paid jobs, the entire purpose of college is higher education.

As someone who just got back from the NCAA swimming and diving competition in Orlando last week, I would beg to differ.

And btw, our close friend placed second on the 1 meter board (men)...lost 1st place by .10 (a real heartbreaker!) and placed 5th on the 3 meter board.

Another friend of the family placed 1st on both the 1 and 3 meter boards (womens). Both from Clarion University of Pennsylvania and both graduates of our local High School. WTG Ray and Jamie!

Both unpaid and both amazing athletes.

I hate to break to you a college education does mean better yourself. I was student atlthetics in basketball got my degree. It has done darn thing for me. It has not help get better job. As matter have work two jobs and still not making enough money to support myself. If some told get a chance to making millions dollars I taking and get education later.

In this world right now college education means a nothing filling kids head with fantasy that crazy.

Say take money because college education means nothing still can be working minium wage job still have college education.

no, they shouldn't. If you are going to pay them, pay drama, debate, math, and all of those other clubs out there. Just because they are talented doens't mean that they deserve better threatment. Does anyone agree with what I am trying to say?

The vast majority of them will never make a living as a professional athlete. Unfortunately, many of them are either completely unprepared for any post-high school academic environment or their academic skills are far too shaky for the schools they end up at.

The system has some serious problems, but I don't think making college sports a paid profession is the way to fix anything.

No it shouldn't be a paid position. It would be sad to see colleges eliminate programs like swimming, running, tennis, etc because they don't draw in crowds. I do think they should be able to give an athlete a living stipend.
By the way my son just gave a verbal commitment with a D1 school for running. This is a sport that gets very little money thanks to title 9 and the bloated budgets for sports such as basketball and football. I could be resentful of those programs who can give their athletes full rides. However it is the income that these sports bring in that will enable my son to get a very good scholarship in his sport.

any college athlete that travels should be paid a stipend if they make their grades. it should only amount to spending or "laundry" money. if an athlete leaves early for the pros, they should pay back all scholarship money they used while at the school.

I think they should be paid. At least in some sports they are certainly making money for the University. (Look at Division 1 college football) They should at least have enough money to go out on the weekend. Otherwise they wind up "taking gifts" from booters and risking the NCAA coming down on them. (Several years ago when Payton Manning was still at UT, he bought Pizza for students spending the night outside the ticket office for a football game. The NCAA investigated to make sure that "he hadn't gotten free pizza or booster money" They don't seem to belive college students should have ANY cash LOL!)

Some of these kids have NOTHING and the NCAA restrictions on jobs etc make it very hard on them.

The NCAA refers to them as "student athletes" for a reason - they are students first and athletes second. The money that the football and basketball programs make are used for scholarships for ALL of the student athletes as well as helping various other "overhead" type services at the universities in the departments such as accounting, human resources, purchasing, etc.

No I don't believe they should be paid. For the ones receiving scholarships, that IS their payment. For the ones who are not on scholarship, they certainly don't have to participate in that sport if they don't want to.

I apply myself to my academic had very good grades. I was forces to tutor for free in math and computer lab because can not get paid because student athletics. This what i did I was failing English so talked someone into writing my papers for me. In exchange for doing there writing there computer programs and trouble shouting there computer programs. Plus took money under table for booasters to. So I get eat and get home to see my family. In if college basketball player in a bigtime program this happens all the time under the table. To say it don't then they is lieing.

For all you moral people out there somtimes doing the right thing does not pay.

I am proud of my degee in Information Systems.

Putting on flame suit now.

No!

I used to be in the pay players camp. However, when you start adding up the price tag on the compensation they receive, tax free, it is amazing. Have you looked at the tuition for Duke, Wake Forest, Notre Dame, Boston Coll, Sanford, and hundreds more? And we need to keep in mind, they are playing a game. If you want to get paid, stop playing and start working.

OK, seeing as you're a college graduate, you won't like what I have to say. I work in a small private College Athletic Department.
An Athlete is being paid===you received a scholarship. If an athlete didn't play basketball, would they receive that scholarship?? NO. That's called PAYMENT. And YES, I know, not all athletes receive a scholarship.

Your above statements obviously show you may not attended all of your English 111 classes. What kind of degree did you go to school for? Information Services?? What type of work are you doing now? If you can't find work in your degree field, then you may have to go back to school for another type of degree. It's funny you can't find work, we're always looking for IT techs, we have a high turnover rate, because they use us as a stepping-stone...work for us for awhile and then go onto a larger company once they have a little experience.

College graduates DO receive more money/payment...more than an average High School graduate. I know THAT for a fact! A college degree means all the difference in the world. You may not agree with me right now, but in a few years, you will realize it.

Oh, and this is not a flame, but I can figure out why you don't have "a job in your degree field".

I agree. I am thankful that college athletics are making it possible for my son to attend a school I could never afford otherwise. He also is going to, I believe, have a good time while doing this. Otherwise he would be at the local state school, live at home and work at least 25 hours per week to cover some of his expenses.

No way should they be paid. They are amateur athletes and amateur athletes cannot be paid, only professional athletes can. No one is forced to be a student athlete. It is a choice you make based on skills you have been given. If you are lucky enough to have a school pay part of your tuition so you can use your skills, that's great. That's all the compensation you deserve though, except for maybe a living stipend, although I'm even up in the air about that.

And to the OP, I was a little confused, but I am pretty sure that you meant to say that your degree in IS has done nothing for you as far as getting a job. I will be graduating in May with an IS degree, and while things are not easy right now, I am much more confident going into the job market with it than without it. I know that this isn't going to be the case for everyone, but I would much rather take my chances with a degree than without one. :flower:
