Should a beginner scrapper buy all this?

Last week I bought a tool kit and rubber stamps.

Later today, I'm going to Michael's to buy the Sidekick, Fiskars paper trimmer and more rubber stamps, plus other less expensive stuff like stickers, etc.

My first beginner scrapbook class is on Friday.

Should I really wait to purchase all this, since I don't know what I'm doing? I thought I'd better buy things while they are on sale.

I would first be concerned with getting tools that will help you organize your photos and selecting an album you like to use. If you spend that much to start on those tools with you may end up with tools you will not use.

Think about which photos you will be scrapbooking. Get them in order.
Find an album you think you will be happy with. Then buy paper and stickers that match what you will be working on right now. Get good scissors, small fine point sharp. A good adhesive (I use Stampin' ups snail and creative memories tape runner, also hemafix dots), avoid using a glue stick on your photos, it gets too messy but can be helpful on other items, so find one or two that will suit what you will be doing.

Also a trimmer may be helpful for cutting those photos down to a size that fits your layouts. But not necessary right now if costs are an issue. I love my Creative Memories personal trimmer for photos, but fiskars makes one that will cut 12x12 paper nicely.

Also, buy a couple scrapbook magazines and look through them. See what style you think best suits you and your budget. The more embellies on the page the more you will be spending. I go to Borders or Waldenbooks and get a cup of coffee and browse their mags before I buy them. You may want to start with simple styles that won't overwhelm you.

Anyway I guess you really only wanted an opinion on whether to buy all those tools, I say wait til your sure you will use them.

I agree. You may want to wait and see. I'd go with basic tools (trimmers, adhesives, corner rounders, pens, paper) before getting embelishments (stickers, stamps...).

Thanks for the advice.

I haven't opened the alphabet rubber stamps or tool kit from last week, so I won't in case I have to return it.
I'll just go out to buy the paper trimmer now.

There's a Chapters book store by Michael's, so it sounds like a good idea to sit and peruse a magazine. I bought one once at the grocery checkout and was shocked at the high price. My local library doesn't carry any scrapbooking magazines.

Well, I'm off soon.

hey, definently get a trimmer, scissors, adhesive. the sidekick is great if you have quickutz or sizzlets, but you might want to wait on those for a little bit. (of course, I have quickutz and LOVE it! and since you can use them in the sidekick, you don't have to buy the handtool for qk). I also love rubber stamps, especially alphabet sets, I use them all the time for titles and stuff. I have about 20 abc sets and use them all, all the time. You should look at the gallery on two peas for ideas. (cheaper than buying scrapbook magazines) www.twopeasinabucket.com Good luck and have fun! maggie

Could you please tell me how to use Quickutz in the sidekick? Do you need an adapter? I would love to know -- my daughter wants to use my quickutz, but the hand tool it too difficult for her to punch with. TIA.

hey you do need an adapter, they are sold in packs of 10. I bought mine online at www.creativexpress.com. I have never seen them in a real store. maggie

I would definitely buy the basic tools first AND see what's available to use at the LSS. There is ALWAYS a sale, always a coupon, and always a gift "wishlist" for the high priced but not necessity items.

When you start up - in either stamping or scrapping - try to take advantage of the sales...i.e. there is a Michael's 40% off 1-item coupon in the paper just about every week. At Hobby Lobby - they have really good sales every now and then, Michael's will also honor competitive coupons (i.e. JoAnns) as well, I don't have an AC Moore near me but sounds like they have nice sales too.

Don't get everything at once...you should save a few things for your Christmas list ;)

I'd say hold off on some of that stuff, too. I personally cannot scrap without my QK or Sizzix, but I think you need to wait and see how into it you get before throwing down that kind of cash. a good trimmer, adhesive, fine point scissors, and a black zig pen are what I recommend in my beginners class. We also spend a good portion of the 1st class on how to shop for supplies. (i.e. always bring the pics you want to use, only buy what's neccessary, etc). I sure can preach the spill, but as my scraproom (and checkbook) can testify I don't practice it. :rotfl2:
