Shorts

I don't see your post as trying to start anything, but I don't believe the concept of respectful dress is a regional thing.

I've been to many weddings where formal attire was specified, and I have never seen anybody show up in a t-shirt and jeans. I have been to these weddings in Southern California, Washington, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, and New Jersey and people in all those states thought it would be disrespectful to the bride and groom to dress casually for a formal event.

I have attended ballets in Washington, California, and Florida. With the exception of ballet school and university performances, people dress formally. I've never seen a note about expected dress on a ticket, and I've never seen a t-shirt and shorts in the theater during an evening performance. Maybe matinees are less formal, but I've never been to one.

When I have attended funerals, the only people not dressed at least semi-formally where the people who dressed for work because they didn't have time to change before or after the services.

Now it's my turn to say I don't want to start anything but...
If any reader thinks it should be perfectly OK to dress however you want for a formal wedding (I'm gracing you with my time, spending my hard earned money to get here, so accept it!) then please explain why you think a t-shirt and jeans are acceptable at what the organizers state is a formal event.

And if any reader thinks it is unacceptable to disrespect a marrying couple or the family of a deceased individual by showing up at a formal wedding or at a funeral in casual dress, but it's perfectly OK to attend a formal dinner dressed totally casually, please explain why one formal event deserves respect and the other doesn't.

UMMM...I wouldn't show up to a "formal or semi formal" event in shorts and a polo shirt either (including a meal)...I was asking why it is disrespectful to show up in shorts and a polo shirt to a "cruise casual" meal?! -Not sure how that compares to a funeral or wedding but maybe I should have been more specific...
I think we are on two different topics...

I hate to dress up Period, But for the cruise "I SUCK IT UP." I guess some folks have different ideas of casual, I for one would think nice shorts and a nice top would equal casual. On DCL it doesn't equate to that.:confused3 So we just go with what the guidelines suggest.

Do I get offended when I see someone in shorts....Not at all, to each there own. That doesn't mean because Joe does it we are going to do it though.:)

I remember as a kid on Sundays as soon as church was over, I was in the back seat of my grandparents car changing into my comfy clothes. I look at this the same way, you only have to wear whatever for a short time.

Bottom line, It is your cruise where what makes you happy.

I think you are right, Andrea. I was specifically thinking about formal nights. On cruise casual nights, I don't have any problem with shorts - as long as they are not short enough to be a significant distraction for the average teenager.

I want to add something, I do not find it disrespectfull to wear shorts, but it does set a tone at dinner if people are all wearing either formal or shorts, the thing is, if it is formal and most folk wore shorts then the folk that go formal would feel a bit out of place and thats not on. Also can i just say, lol, I dont care what folk wear at to my funeral, my hubby had a lovely mickey tie on last week on our cruise and i told him if I die first he has to wear it to my funeral and not a black tie to make folk smile!!:dance3:

First timer this month. Other than the formal nights, are men permited to wear dress shorts to dinner - and a golf shirt?

They're not going to ask you to leave--But I personally wish people wouldn't wear shorts and jeans to dinner. Just me though. You can do whatever you want.

Clothes Hierarchy

The Tuxes :snooty: look down upon the suits
The Suits look down upon the sport coats
The Sport Coats look down upon the dress shirts
The Dress Shirts look down upon the polo shirts
The Polo Shirts look down upon the tee shirts
The Tee Shirts look down upon the tank tops
The Tank Tops look down upon the shorts
The Shorts look down upon the swimming suits

and so it goes:)

and everyone looks down on me because I'm wearing sandals and dark socks :earseek: but at least I'm NOT wearing shorts to dinner

After reading this thread I need some advice - where do the "Jeans Wearers" go:confused3: Thanks for your help.:smooth:

Didn't know that was a hot button to press around here, too! Guess we blew it there as well, as we dried stuff there every day. Why would people even care since they have to be invading my personal space to notice? :confused3 Seems like that would be similar to complaining where I stored my feminine products in the bathroom!

:rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2:

It was a very 'hot' topic in another thread because apparently a lit cig ignited something on a verandah and caused a major fire on a cruise ship.

So, there was a safety bulletin by some govt agency that prohibits that kind of thing now.

True story.

lol, sorry to change the subject but that reminds me of a story when I was 16 travelling in the back on Dads car, gran was in the front and lit a ciggy up, Dad says what do you think your doing can you put that out, she through it out the window, yes you know what I am going to say, it came in the back window and set fire to the back seat. It was not a happy household that day from what I can remember!!! Still makes me kaugh though and it was 20 years ago(god bless you Gran!:flower3: )

:lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2: I like where the threads going now...One time my uncle took me & my siblings to the park across the street from my house and he forgot his lighter so he told me & my sis to go home and light it on the stove (I think we were about 7 & 12 at the time and he was not supposed to be smoking around us let alone having is handle them!). We lit it and had the bright idea that we could get it back to him faster if she drove the bike with me on the handlebars. We hit a bump and the cigarette flew up into my hair singeing all of my bangs off. My mom was NOT happy when I explained what happened!

Second, I can not honestly say that I "noticed" what anyone else was wearing in the dining rooms. I know people were dressed from extremely casual to very nice on all nights, but can not tell you how many wore formal attire or not, etc. It really had no bearing on the level of enjoyment I had at dinner. To feel disrespected because someone else chooses to dress casually in a restaurant is petty and egocentric in my opinion.

I agree, Kari. :thumbsup2

My DH and I were on the same cruise as Karibritt01 and our 4 top table was always on an aisleway in all 3 restaurants. Did I notice anyone's dress whether it was shorts or a tux? No. Do I care what people wear? No. When a person is seated at a table, can I see whether that person is wearing shorts, jeans, skirt, etc.? No. It just doesn't matter. A person's choice of clothes does not bother me, especially when I am enjoying a wonderful cruise on the Magic. I never pay attention to cruisers walking into a restaurant and to those around me, I'm too busy having fun with my tablemates, making dinner choices, enjoying our servers, etc.
