Our stay: Jan 18-Jan 24.
Checked in using the Diamond Lane line as the regular line was HUGE. This was at around 3pm. Only one person ahead of me in the Diamond Lane line, but by the time it was my turn, the regular line was gone. Go figure. I was told that the Villa they were going to give me wasn't ready, so they had another. It was in the Fountains section. I asked for Cascades, was told requests are not guaranteed, etc. DH took the kids to see the grounds around the Lobby (beautifull) and DD (7) got her face painted and a baloon. DS (21 mos) just happy to run around. We get to the Fountains section. It was WAY out in the boonies of the resort, near the highway. The noisy highway. Very run down area, with boards missing or loose from the railings at the top of some stairways. We were given a second floor unit, no elevators in the buildings. (We really needed an elevator) It was really, really far from the pool area, so far you would need to drive. The villa was very large, lots of room. Old, old, old appliances in the kitchen, very worn counters and cabinets. Furniture looked as if it could use a good shampoo. Carpet was a bright green (not lime!) with the worn/damaged areas having been cut out and replaced with same carpet. looked as if they took carpet from another old villa and replaced the bad spots with it. The Villa had a closed up smell, like a smoker had the villa, and then they sprayed airfreshener and closed it up. For a long time. Beds in the rooms were worn, almost to the point of worn out. The crib I had requested arrived broken, with only a double bed flat sheet. I called to get another crib, which arrived after we got back from dinner. This crib was a pack and play that was filthy, with no linen. At this point I called to get a 3rd crib and while on hold I found a used band aid. When the person came on the line I very nicely explained that I really needed to be moved due to the fact that it was far from everything, dirty, etc. 5 minutes later we were told a bell man would deliver a new set of key cards to a newer villa with an elevator nearer the pools etc. and that he would move our luggage and take us to the new villa. Bellman delivered the keys at the same time the new crib was delivered. We ended up following the crib delivery guy to the new place, but the luggage didn't arrive untill 3 hours later. Around 9pm. The new villa was NEW and beautifull in the Lakes section. A little smaller that the Fountains villa, but all new, clean and fresh smelling. It had a water view of a nice lake, and you could see a little bit of the pool area. The unit was on the 3rd floor, quiet unless you were in the kitchen, then you could only hear some parking lot noise. Whirlpool tub in the master bedroom 2 doubles in the 2nd bedroom. Very nice villa.

Pools-there are 7 of them, all beautifull. All looked clean and well taken care of. The two whirlpools at the Lakes pool area were nice, one hot and the other hotter. Plenty of towels.

Restaurants- We tried to eat at the Flamingo, but the wait was 45 mins, with a really rude service person. The Manager came out and apologized, said they had a big party in another room and couldn't keep up. Didn't look like they planned very well. It was kids eat free night, not a whole lot of people there. They had let us wait for 20 mins before being seated and they told us the wait would be 45 mins before they could take our order. We decided to eat elsewhere.
We did eat at Zimmies the food and service were very sub standard. The food was all you can eat BBQ. It consisted of boiled chicken in BBQ sauce, dried out burgers/hot dogs, frozen corn on the cob, Van Camps pork and beans, salad bar and canned pudding. All for 10 bucks a piece. We learned our lesson about food at the Vistana- eat in your room or at a restaurant off the resort.

The resort is beautiful, clean and some sections are very nice. Some are not so nice, and some are down right yucky. They were in the process of refurbing some areas when we were there. The security people were great, as was the gentleman that brought all the cribs. Ben the time share welcome desk guy was very nice too. No one else really made you think that your stay was important or mattered.

We talked with a few other couples, RCI owners, they said that for a RCI swap you would get an older section. We rented from Starwood, Sheraton's owner, and were supposed to get one of the better villas. That way, we would be more inclined to attend their time share presentation and purchase. This according to the welcome desk people.

Would I stay there again? Only if I was guaranteed a new villa. Otherwise no way. I don't want to spend my vacation in a run down "villa".

That's my two bits....
I'll answer any questions you may have.

I'm a little worried - you are not the first person who has said that they heard RCI timeshare trade-ins get the older units at this resort. We are trading in there this summer. I'm a little confused, though, because we are guaranteed a unit that sleeps 8 and I've also heard that only the newer units sleep 8. Anyone else know about this? Our confirmation says that it sleeps 8 and 6 of those are in privacy (meaning a bedroom). I take that to mean that one bedroom has a queen or king bed and the 2nd bedroom has 2 doubles. The 7th and 8th person would be on the sleeper sofa. Does anyone know if this configuration is only in certain sections of the resort?
I guess I could email or call the resort and find out - just thought I'd ask here first!
Thanks!

We traded in twice now in 1997 and then in 2001 and each time they have stuck us in the old part.

We traded in also and got put in an old unit to start with. There was no way that I was going to stay in a musty old dump. So I went back and asked them to move us to a newer unit that didn't smell.

The pictures that they show on the official site are sooooooo misleading. Our unit didn't look anything close to what is shown. Our had kelly green carpet with a navy blue sofa. The bedroom looked like it came out of a 1980's furniture showroom. Actually, I think that the wallpaper or paint in the 2nd bedroom was 1970's yellow.

The plus part about staying at Vistana was that the pools were very nice and we loved the extra room in the condo.

Would I stay there again? Probably not.

Surely its time RCI reviewed Vistana's Gold Crown status if exchangers are being placed in the older more run down sections of the resort.I for one who own at an immaculate Gold Crown resort would not be happy with anything less than a unit of equal standards to that of my home resort.

Sean.

I own at Vistana in an older section, although not the oldest.

I have my unit deposited in RCI, I put in a trade for any Central Florida resort (Vistana preferrably). for Easter week in April. Getting really annoyed at RCI, as I can't believe no one who owns in Florida has not deposited their week. I deposited my August week in September (11 months out) suppose to be better trading value LOL. And I thought Orlando was a saturated area. Guess not.

But back to the OP, I have stayed in the oldest unit "The Courts" section and actually I liked it very much. Maybe we were lucky as the units contents were not old and outdated. It is VERY convenient to the pools and General Store etc.

I have noticed that the older units are larger than the newer ones by quite a bit.

I do like the Lakes zero depth pool very much. One of my favorites as it is quiet and empty (at least when we were there.
Cascades pool is way to loud for me with the fountains.
I do like the Super pool.

Restaurants aren't bad for a quick bite, but you aren't going to get gourmet food.

I think it is quite sad that they put a "paying" guest, in an old section. I am only saying that as I'm sure you paid big bucks to stay there by booking through Starwood directly. At least RCI traders would be able to call RCI if Vistana didn't move you upon your request, and RCI would get it taken care of for you.

Well let me know what you all think my odds are of getting my Easter week trade in Orlando.

Thanks

We've only stayed in older units in the past and have had good luck. It has been the same for my grandparents. They have definitely been working on redoing the older units, but not all of the "old" units at Vistana are bad. We stayed in Courts last time, which is the oldest section, and were very happy with it. Maybe it's our luck, but the whole resort isn't bad, just certain units.

A couple of points:

Mog- the first unit I had had 1 king, 2 doubles in the 2nd bedroom and a sofa in the living room. I don't know if it was a pull out or not. In the new unit (Lakes) there was 1 king (quite comfortable- I have back issues and my DH sleeps like a flopping fish and I slept fine) 2 doubles in the 2nd bed room and a double pull out in the living room. All very quiet.

Courts section was being refurb'd while we were there. It was an older altho nice looking section, 2 story. All the other sections looked a LOT nicer than the Fountains section we were org. given. It was just bad. I can do old and outdated, not dirty worn and falling apart.

Zero entry pool was empty the whole time we were there too, very nice and quiet.

I thought I had a good deal, got a promo rate on the Starwood site, 119.00 per night. My DH said they must look at the rate you are paying and asign the room accordingly. I would've been really p***** if I had paid the posted 189.00 a night.

And, like I said in my OP, once we got the new villa, we were happy with the villa. Nice and clean, lots of room.
Oh, I did forget to mention the bug problem. There seemed to be a problem with a fruit fly type bug in the kitchen. They had left several traps out (my DS 21 mos found a few). We needed to keep the sink and counters spotless in order not to have a few roaming.

Oh, and about the food, not only was it not gourmet, it was just nasty. Not even good for a quick bite. Bleah.

Thanks for the input!

We just returned from a stay at the Sheraton Vistana Resort as well (January 24 - 31st) and we LOVED it. We went on an RCI trade-in and I used Diamond Lane Check-In the week before we arrived and requested the "Cascades" section and an early check-in time of 2:00 pm, when we arrived a little before 2:00 our room was already available and we were given the section we requested! Our room was very clean and I couldn't get enough of the whirlpool bath right there in our master bedroom - I had to fight the kids to get to it first! We ate at the Cascades Bar & Grill twice during our stay, the food wasn't bad and the people working there were more then friendly to us. We would most definetly stay there again, in fact we plan to next January :D

Mjasp - I think you are too late - I have got my 2004 and 2005 exchange - 2004 Thanksgiving at Sheraton Vistana Resort - 2005 July 4 at Orange Lake.

So I am not sure what you can do - have you posted on tug for a direct trade between other Vistana owners????

I plan on staying at the sheraton vistana in september. I am going thru expedia.com for a package deal that includes hotel, airfare and car rental. How do I request a certain room if I am not a timeshare owner? also if I do not like the room would I still be able to request to be moved?.

Pat...I deposited a year in advance. RCI is telling me that most people have not depostited their April week yet as the maintenance has to be paid first, and they ususally do that in December, so it should be coming through soon. That is what they are telling me anyway. This is my first dealings with RCI. So we will see.

Mjasp - if you haven't already go join tug

then you can see their sights and distress exchanges - that really helps when you want a particular resort for a particular time.

this board also posts when the resorts do their bulk spacebanking.

it looks like Sheraton did 2/12/2003 for June - aug 04.

would you consider a different resort?

www.tug2.net

Pat...What is bulk space bulking? Distress exchanges? CAn you tell I never used RCI before.

Yes, I absolutely would accept a different resort as long as it was a gold crown resort. And I would also accept Orlando or any beach resort in Florida. So I am pretty open.

alot of the big Orlando timeshares do spacebanking - then when you put in a week in RCI this is where they will come from - go look on your RCI membership and see if the week is your week or more than likely a spacebank week.

you are looking for it too - right?

www.rci.com

I only have done direct exchange through the internet - I haven't try to go through an operator with RCI - althrough you have to call them - you can't stay but once every 4 or 3 years in most of the Orlando resort - since you are a owner that might not apply to you.

you would be happy with any of the Marriott (they are generally last minute) - Cypress Harbour (2619), Royal Palms (1699) and Sabal Palms(1276) are Marriott. the Hilton (3517), houses at summer bay (6884), Summer bay (3175), you might like Silver Lake???

any of them showing up?

Actually when I called they said there was nothing in the state of Florida.

It is my week on my membership. Where does Sheraton get the weeks from, to do spacebanking. Boy, I'm getting a timeshare education. LOL But one that I needed.
