We have never had to do this before so I am hoping the much DVC wiser folks here will be able to help.

We do not have enough points for this grand gathering we are doing in WDW the week of Thanksgiving . Today when I talked with member services she said we could only buy 24 one time use points per use year.

We could take from the next use year but my mother in law doesnt want us to do that .

I know we could transfer from another member but I dont know how that works or how you find them to do that ( I am thinking here is a good place LOL ) I am worried we wont find anyone willing to do this for Thanksgiving time .

Is is it better just to rent the extra points ? How hard will that be since we will be on our own points 3 out of the 5 nights ?

I hope someone can help me out .

TIA

So I'm not sure what say DMIL should have in how you use your points...but beyond that you have two options for renting points - through the DIS Boards Rent/Trade board ( provided you meet the posting requirements) or you could try David's Rental. I would go to the Rent/Trade forum and read the stickies at the top. As you noted getting someone to work this would mean that you would have to find someone with the right UY and who has points at the resort that you want to do your gathering at. That's a lot of Pixie Dust.

Personally, if they're your points, I would borrow -- the time and hassle are outweighed by the peace of mind of knowing my reservation is set.

My $.02.

Yep agree with above borrowing. While I don't have any personal experience with David's Rentals, I get the sense he can find what you are looking for relatively quick which can put you at ease since this is a peak time for DVC reservations. Once your rental reservation is secured you could probably work with DVC on linking the reservations. The only downside is with David's you pay a little more for your rental but the risk is much less.

If you decide to go the rent / trade on these boards the advantage you gain is another member can transfer the points to you and you can have one reservation. The challenge will be finding someone with the home resort to ensure the 11 month booking window. Transferring points is less risky than renting in my opinion but there is still a level of trust that is needed by both parties.

I just had the same problem and found another DVC member on the rent/trade board to transfer to me. I personally like controlling the points and knowing they are in my account, with one reservation. I also looked into renting points, so neither option is bad, it's just where you feel comfortable. Also, it is a little harder to get a transfer since we can only do one per year. I had to inquire on several threads on the rent/trade before finding someone. Good luck with your decision :goodvibes

First, you can not secure those 24 points until the 7 month window...so, I would consider a transfer from another member since that would allow you to book the entire reservation on your membership.

The key is to find points that will be eligible for your trip next year. If they are the same resort as you own, then you can combine them with your own to book during home resort time period. If not, then you will be forced to wait until 7 months.

If they are the same resort and UY that you own, they should show up online in your account, which means you can book that way (that is how it worked for me). If they are either a different resort or different UY, then they only can be used by calling MS.

But, getting a transfer vs. renting a reservation for those other nights from a different member keeps everything within one account and you are in control. If you had to cancel or change the trip, you can do it all vs. having to contact another member.

Personally, if I ever need additional points, beyond the 24 available via MS at 7 months, I'd secure a transfer.

You can even go through the Timeshare Store now to find points for transfer as well as our own board.

Good luck!

Thanks guys for the responses .

Still up in the air about what we are going but I think a transfer would be the best thing to make it a seamless stay . We are going to contact David's to get info on how that works .

As far as why my MIL is putting in her 2 cents, she is wanting pay for the difference because she doesn't want us to dip into our points and be short the next year . We take our grandkids every year on our points for 7-10 days .

She wants to help and I think that's super nice since my BIL and SIL are coming bringing their 3 kids

SO....given the info regarding your mother-in-law's role in this and for the ease of control, why not borrow points from next year's UY for your T-day grand gathering then have her contribute to your renting of points for next year's vacation?
