Shore Excursion Request by E-mail?

Has anyone ever e-mailed a shore excursion request prior to the 90 day mark? I e-mailed before I realized I wasn't close to the correct day; called and talked to a DCL CM who didn't know if they would hold the e-mail and then process on the 90 day out date. CM checked and said my request would be held and then processed on the correct date. Does anyone know if this is true I'm thinking I should call on the first day to request an excursion or will that cause a problem? DD really wants to swim with the dolphins in Puerto Vallarta and I read that the excursion books up quickly.
