shopping in new york?

so i have been told in no uncertain terms that we will not be doing any shopping in orlando other than on disney property....
apparently, two weeks is insufficient time to both visit WDW and shop..

so i plan on ordering from catalogues and having them deliver to our disney resort..

but that only works for DH...

DD said she would be "willing" to shop during our stop in new york on the way back home..

so....

has anyone done any shop till you drop type shopping in manhattan?

though i lived in manhattan 30 years ago, i haven't a clue where to shop today...i don't even know where the good shopping streets are...
or where a bargain hunter would go to find good value for money..

any stores you feel are especially worth our time?

Macy's on 34th Street! You can spend all day in the store, shopping and having lunch. Conway stores are also on 34th, which have bargains galore. Old navy is nearby, as is Fossil and other stores on 34th.

The Disney Times Square store is within walking distance . I personally shop in Soho. Great designers, and you can get some decent prices.

Most of all, have fun!

thanks! i'm mapping out our plan of attack on google earth....i see what you mean about that area....it's changed quite a bit....macy's is still there, but all those other stores there are new....definitely looks worthwhile...

we also want to buy sport shoes for all (e.g. nike)...i noticed a few places we could get those as well..

maybe we should go down to soho, now that i think about it....DD's a performer and is supposed to have hot or cool or whatever you call them clothes for the stage....they cost a fortune here....i'm sure we should be able to find that sort of thing in new york...
probably soho would be a good place...

you should see how long my shopping list is now..

we're only there for a day and a half, so i'm going to have to make a very detailed schedule of where and when...

we have to go to Sam Ash on 48th..

oh - i have to find the electronics store i saw yesterday, but forgot to write down....gotta go find it....

anyway, we have to go to the village and soho.....
and maybe the upper east side a bit (around madison and the 70's)..

and DD will need time to try stuff on..
i should have scheduled more time in NY but i wasn't thinking in terms of her clothes (she's a performer, so what better place to buy clothes than new york...i really am an idiot)..

did you notice that the apple store on 5th avenue is open 24/7/365?
that's the most insane thing i've ever heard!!!
so i guess we'll go there after everything else is closed...

No, I hadn't noticed that - well, that is DH sorted out while I visit the Laura Geller studio, lol!

We are staying on Madison Ave so shopping in that area will be easy for us. I'm at the point where I have grouped everything we're doing into areas, and now just need to assign days.

Of our 6 nights, only arrival night and one other doesn't have a show! We booked cheapest seats so we could see lots Seeing Book of Mormon, How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Catch Me If You Can and Zarkana by Cirque du Soleil (at Radio City!).

This will be my 3rd trip but Carl's 2nd.

we're going at the end of august..
new york's amazing!!! you should try to get the lay of the land before you go though, as it's BIG!!
for newbies, i highly recommend taking the double decker bus tour around - both the northern and southern loops - it will give you a nice overview of the city...
have you bought tickets for any broadway shows? if not, you could try buying them at TKTS in times square, but if it were me, i'd go online (to www.telecharge.com) and buy tickets now....it won't be as cheap as TKTS but at least you'll know you have tickets and you won't have to waste time in that ridiculous line...

new york's a walking kind of town...what we do is take a taxi to an area and then walk walk walk in that area....e.g. spend time on the upper east side, or down in the village, or soho, or wall street, etc....

and of course there are the museums.....if you're a museum person, there's no end to what you can se..

oh...and then there's central park....a must see....it's HUGE, so look at a map and check the guides to see what you'd like to see there....(we like the zoo there, but that's us)..

FAO Schwartz, the big toy store on 5th avenue is also worth a look (it's across from the plaza hotel)...

i'm so stupid that i only scheduled in a day and a half....i should change it for a few more days, but i think DSIL has to get back to work..

on our past trips we've done the - 3 nights in new york/ 3 broadway shows!! so much fun..
we only have time for one show this trip - book of mormon....i bought the tickets 4 months ago....i got orchestra, but there were only a few left at the time, so they're not the best, but i'm sure we'll enjoy it wherever we sit..

you're going to love the baseball game!!! you can't get any more american than that!!!!!!!!!

how old are your kids? - they'll probably also like the double decker bus - each loop takes about 2 hours from start to finish...

they might also like the ferry to the statue of liberty....or the circle line ferry...

i don't know if they're into stuff like this, but the american museum of natural history is a favorite of my kids......

a visit to the apple store on 5th avenue and 58th street.....

a visit to the m&m store in times square (assuming they like m&ms)

the aircraft carrier....i think it's called the intrepid....my kids enjoyed visiting that....(i have geeky kids)...

Seconding Century 21. You can buy all kinds of things there, from housewares to shoes to clothes. And you more than likely will be in the area at some point during your trip as it is across the street from the WTC site.

And since someone mentioned Conway's, I'll pipe in here: in my experience, the prices are indeed low, but so is the quality of the merchandise. I always do much better visiting Old Navy and looking for the sales rack there. There are several large stores (Old Navy, Burlington Coat Factory) on 6th Avenue between 14th and 23rd Streets. The Old Navy there has a large section devoted to marked-down merchandise and I've gotten some real bargains there.
